Commercial Small Business Underwriting Portfolio Strategy & Analysis Underwriting Specialist
Job Summary
Individual contributor responsible for driving the Commercial Small Business strategy. The role is accountable for driving business results through detailed analytics and identification of improvement areas for the Small Business portfolio. This role will focus on compiling data, identifying trends, analysis and discovery of what is driving results in underwriting profitability (loss ratio, combined ratio, rate) by territory, line of business or industry segment. Will work in collaboration with the Commercial Small Business (Finance, Risk Control, Actuarial, and Claim) team to design and implement solutions to drive continued growth and profitability of the portfolio. This role indirectly and directly impacts the overall business success.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Compiles data and performs analysis across all lines of the Small Business portfolio. Identifies the profitable areas as well as those needing improvements. Clearly identifies, validates and supports purpose for instituting actions and controls to improve the business
2. Is responsible for working with Finance, Actuarial, Claim, Risk Control and underwriting leaders to compile and analyze business metrics and trends.
3. Reviews underwriting guidelines and makes changes to guidelines based upon strategic business initiatives including pricing direction as well as develop, implement and monitor overall business
4. Recommend underwriting and pricing improvements to leadership based upon overall analysis such as review of loss drivers (perils/causes of loss). Utilizes and leverages findings to position business portfolio that improves Small Business loss ratio and achieve/exceed targeted goals New Business, Renewals and overall impacts on Combined Ratio
5. Develop and provide training to underwriters when needed on various rollouts developed
6. Assist in managing Small Business CAT strategies by working with underwriting leadership and support functions to determine action plans and focus
7. Work closely with Marketing Directors, underwriting team, Program team, FSSs and Agency Automation when it comes to Program and Book Roll opportunities by providing support as needed in identifying and executing business plans

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. High level of knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
2. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
3. Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
5. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and other business-related software especially in working with exporting of data from various databases and compiling reports in MS Excel and other software tools.
7. Demonstrated leadership skills.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
2. Typically a minimum 3-5 years of a combination of underwriting, data analysis/trending of underwriting information, and/or actuarial experience.
