Jobs Expanding for Pharmacy Technicians

During a troubled economy, many individuals are searching for a career that will lead them to long–term job stability. These people may find what they are looking for in the position of pharmacy technician, where they will work alongside licensed pharmacists to fill prescriptions and perform administrative duties.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for pharmacy technicians is expected to grow by 25% through 2018, which is much faster than average for all occupations. In 2010, the median annual salary for these professionals was $28,400.

In order to land a position in the fast–growing pharmacy field, some people opt to earn a two–year pharmacy technician associate's degree. As the industry continues to expand, many community colleges, such as Southwest Georgia Technical College, have seen an increase in the number of students studying to become pharmacy technicians, WALB reports.

"Healthcare is always growing, so as the population gets older, as we all get older, we start taking more medications. So it’s a great field," Dr. Amy Ryan, a pharmacy technician instructor at the college, told WALB.
