As a result of recent economic hardships, many business professionals are updating their knowledge of the industry by enrolling in master's degree programs. In order to provide these students with the most recent curriculum in various specializations, including small business management, some schools are working with companies to design updated graduate offerings.

For example, academic officials from Washington-based Aspen University have announced a partnership with Small and Medium Business (SMB) Nation to launch the Online MBA program. The two institutions created this opportunity for professionals who hold a certificate or degree in information technology (IT) and are looking to apply their knowledge in the business world. Enrollees will also be equipped with the skills needed for success during market changes and business challenges. "Our goal is to get information out to as many SMB business owners as possible to help them not just survive, but prosper on the other of this market shift," said David E. Lady, president of Aspen University.

Individuals who obtain a master's degree may be qualified for promotions or better-paying jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that professionals who had completed graduate programs earned approximately $1,257 per week in 2008.
