Having gained about 83,500 new private sector jobs by December 2012, the New York State Department of Labour exhibits promising figures for the market for jobs in New York.

In spite of the widespread impact of Hurricane Sandy in the end of 2012, the New York jobs unemployment rate fell by an impressive 0.4% within the span of a single month. With about 35,000 new jobs added within one month this job market is definitely one to look out for.

Who's Hiring and Who's not?

The sectors that have projected the highest job gains include – professional and business services with 55,000 new jobs; education and health services with 27,800 new jobs. The trade, transport and utilities sector; the government, financial activities, leisure and hospitality sectors have also presented opportunities for job seekers.

On the other hand, the construction, manufacturing, information, natural resources and mining industries have exhibited a downward trend in their hiring. The largest job losses in manufacturing were found in the production of non-durable goods especially in the chemical manufacturing segment.

It is predicted that the coming year will continue to show a consistent growth among the leading industries with a special impetus on hiring for the technical, scientific and professional services positions.
