While many career experts will harp on resume content all day long, I believe there is one element of your resume that is more critical than the content. Don't get me wrong-you need strong, compelling content to reel the hiring manager in and land the interview, but creating a memorable first impression is even more important. If your resume doesn't make a great first impression, chances are the hiring manager will never even make it down to your amazing resume content.
What one element creates a memorable first impression? The format and design of your resume. I review hundreds of resumes every single week, and the one area in which I see job seekers are the weakest is in resume design/format. Most job seekers have no idea what their format is communicating about them. I'm here to tell you it isn't pretty ... at all ... Most resumes are poorly organized, use outdated fonts, and have no structure. Your resume format needs to be easy-to-read, well laid out, and information needs to be easy to find.
Here are some items to consider:
- Paragraphs and bullets
- Balanced page?
- Font style
- Font size
- Easy to read?
- Logical format
- Crucial information easy to locate
- Too much white space
Take the above mentioned points into consideration and evaluate your resume based on each one to ensure your resume format is communicating the right message to employers-and not an unprofessional image.
