Job Description

Will Statement Will: Be a member of the Guidance Navigation and Control Hardware and Testbed Development Group (3444) and will report to the Technical Group Supervisor. Will be responsible for the design, development, integration and flight qualification of smart sensor systems for entry descent and landing. Will also independently propose and develop new sensor technology for absolute and relative on-board spacecraft Guidance Navigation and Control. Secure funding for technology development and lead effort to develop technology for infusion into future flight projects.Plans, designs, implements, verifies, and operates the flight path and attitude determination and control systems for spacecraft, launch vehicles, and atmospheric entry vehicles. Performs system engineering, mission analysis, mission design, trajectory design, and trajectory analysis. Develops or procures and integrates sensors for inertial orientation and motion and target relative range and velocity. Develops control principles and algorithms and sensor technologies for precision optical pointing and wavefront control. Relevant scenarios are powered and coast phases of flight, earth orbit, interplanetary cruise, orbit insertion, orbit design/ operations/ maintenance, spacecraft disposal, outer planet satellite tour, entry, descent and landing, precision formation flying, autonomous rendezvous and docking, orbiting observatories, and small body proximity operations. Mission Design functions include mission analysis, trajectory design, launch vehicle performance analysis and targeting specifications, spacecraft requirements analysis, vehicle breakup analysis, planetary quarantine analysis, aerodynamic effects analysis, landing site dispersion analysis, and consumable and resource utilization analysis. Navigation functions include flight path/orbit determination of both spacecraft and natural bodies, using both ground-based and spacecraft-based data; these functions include estimation of gravity fields, rotational dynamics parameters, and other geophysical parameters. Guidance functions are the formulation and implementation of algorithms and control laws to achieve flight path control, desired pointing and relative positioning in space and the development/procurement and integration of sensors. Control design and analyses processes consist of the development of the control requirements for spacecraft and the implementation of control algorithms for scenarios listed above.• Performs complex and wide-ranging job functions and activities across disciplines.• Designs, analyzes, simulates, and/or tests sensors of highly complex G&C subsystems.• Applies extensive understanding and wide application in field to perform highly complex GNC trade studies.• Designs or procures and integrates highly complex hardware assemblies.• Applies advanced knowledge in field to evaluate GNC technologies. • Publishes work in conference and journal papers.• Works independently on key projects and assignments with only limited direction, typically receiving few or no instructions.• Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives and institutional goals have been met.• Responsible for approving others’ work, and ensuring compliance with requirements, on key projects and assignments.• As a team leader, accountable for team results on such projects and assignments, including performance standards, budget and schedule.• Actions and decisions will have a significant positive impact on a multifunctional organization due to creation of new business opportunities, mission success, technology breakthroughs, and improvements in processes or methods.• Failures to achieve results or erroneous decisions will have a substantial adverse impact on team or functional organization’s ability to achieve major project objectives.• Leads a team for a project activity, or function within scope of assigned responsibility.• R
