We are currently accepting applications for fellowship positions in the Department of Radiological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, for the academic year 2018-2019. The Department offers fellowships in seven different subspecialty areas, for advanced clinical training.
Fellowships are at the Health Sciences Clinical Instructor level, based at UC Irvine Medical Center, and will have the benefits and privileges of this position through the University of California, Irvine.
Our mission, within the Department, and in a broader context as a University of California School of Medicine campus, is to provide an excellent educational experience so as to produce highly trained fellows who will go on to become leaders in their subfields. We believe that we provide an optimal combination of study volume, procedure volume, experience with sequencing/protocoling, academic time, and optional research time, to produce very knowledgeable, balanced radiologists, with cutting edge knowledge of their subspecialties.
A one-year fellowship is offered in Musculoskeletal Radiology (two positions). This fellowship provides experience in image guided interventional orthopedic procedures, including arthography, joint aspiration, soft tissue and bone biopsy techniques, and orthopedic pain management procedures (steroid and anesthetic injections). Experience is available in radiofrequency bone tumor ablation and vertebroplasty. Advanced training is provided in interpretation of musculoskeletal radiography, CT, and MRI.
We are the only level one trauma center in Orange County (with a population of over 3 million), and provide imaging services for the National Cancer Institute sponsored Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center on the Medical Center campus, with an active orthopedic oncology service. We currently have a 64-channel CT scanner for the ER and inpatients, a 64-channel PET-CT scanner, a 16-channel CT scanner for outpatients, and a single channel CT scanner with fluoroscopic capability for interventional procedures. We have a 3-Tesla Siemens Trio MRI scanner and a 1.5-Tesla Siemens Avanto MRI scanner. Considerable expansion of the radiology department facilities, both in terms of floor space and new equipment, occurred with the opening of the radiology facilities in the new Douglas University Hospital in 2010. This general expansion will include a new Philips 128 channel CT in the current University Tower facilities, a new 16-channel CT in the Emergency Department, and new 256-channel CT, 3T MRI, and 16-channel SPECT/CT scanners in the Douglas Hospital, as well as other equipment.
Successful applicants will be Health Sciences Clinical Instructors at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. The fellows will participate in the teaching of UC Irvine residents and medical students, actively participate in interdisciplinary conferences, and take an active part in the on-going research projects and publications of the section. There will be five faculty members supervising the fellowship.
