Job Description

Will Statement Will: Will be a member of the JPL Earth Atmospheric Science Section and will report to the Section Manager. Will conceive, plan and conduct cutting-edge research in carbon cycle science and help lead JPL’s carbon cycle science activities. Provides leadership in shaping the Laboratory’s direction and emphasis in the carbon cycle science area, and in particular on integrating multiple carbon-related research elements and measurement technologies at JPL as well as from the community at large to address one or more strategic carbon cycle science questions, including its connections to the global water and energy cycles. Initiates and directs individual or collaborative research using airborne and space-based measurements, as well as other observational and modeling assets, to conduct novel and integrative research. Represent and communicate JPL science to the public. Serve as an organizational spokesperson on projects and programs, including presentation of scientific strategies and results at reviews, conferences, and in print. Advise senior management and customers on advanced research, studies, and applications. Bring broad discretion and independent judgment to bear in developing and implementing solutions to exceptionally complex scientific problems. Provide highly innovative and ingenious solutions that extend the boundaries of knowledge and/or practice in disciplines associated with carbon cycle science research. Will serve as a resource and/or mentor for others on and across the Laboratory’s carbon cycle science activities.Identifies scientific questions and issues, and applies theoretical principles, creative/analytical techniques and scientific methods to their solution. Conceives, plans, and conducts Research and Development efforts involving theoretical, observational, and experimental study. Publishes or contributes to publications in refereed scientific journals, and presents papers at scientific conferences. Writes or contributes to proposals to support research and missions to achieve scientific goals. Pursues new mission and/or instrument opportunities through advocacy and outreach within the scientific and stakeholder community. Remains abreast of and consults on all applicable scientific advancements.• Develops new approaches for scientific investigations.• May promote and advocate for new mission or instrument opportunities of strategic relevance to JPL through advocacy with the peer scientific community.• Significant contributor (author and/or peer reviewer) on high-impact publications.• Performs highly complex, and unique job functions and activities.• Works critical, often self initiated, assignments and projects under only consultative direction• Actions and decisions have a significant positive impact on the success of the Laboratory, due to creation of significant new business opportunities, critical mission successes, emerging technology breakthroughs, and state-of-the-art improvements in processes or methods.• Erroneous decisions or recommendations will result in failure to achieve the organization’s critical objectives and affect its reputation and credibility.• Directs work, inspires, mentors and coaches others internal and external to institution and scope of responsibility.• Applies significant expertise in one or more related fields of knowledge to provide leadership, oversight, and monitoring to an organization’s technical products, services, and/or capabilities; provides assessment of technical deliverables; resolves technical and resource issues.• Frequent use of creativity and innovation to extend the boundaries of achievement in a given field of knowledge or practice.• Exercises broad discretion and independent judgment in devising, and developing techniques to evaluate and decide among, unique approaches and solutions to major problems with Laboratory-wide impact.• Advises and consults wit
