DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, develop departmental program and processes for logistics moving materials, people and animals between needed locations (over 30 locations); develop departmental program and processes for logistics; evaluate and assess departmental program and adjust processes as needed to provide effective equipment maintenance and repair includes interface with University department of Facilities Management; evaluate and assess departmental program and adjust processes as needed to maintain effective departmental logistical support; lead in oversight of team which provides logistical support, equipment maintenance and repair, and facility maintenance and repair to department; manage and oversee Logistics, Equipment and Maintenance operations of multiple facilities, provide operational support within operations center while using all systems to maintain departmental communications; provide analysis of services including financial analysis to operate within budget. In conjunction with various units, develop business plans for new and existing programs.

Perform variety of skilled tasks in maintenance, alteration and repair of vivarium related facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Maintain and repair mechanical and electrical equipment and facilities including plumbing and pipe-fitting; heating, air control and filtration systems and equipment: repair change stations, exhaust and supply fans and replacing, filters; repair; restore and maintain structures, counters and cabinets; repair and replace variety of animal care equipment, cage-washing equipment, refrigerators/freezers and other mechanical kitchen equipment; repair ceilings, floors, walls, roofs, and perform caulking of buildings; maintain and operate autoclaves; and instruct or lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants.

Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and operate University vehicle. Must be willing to work offset work schedule other than 8-5, overtime, weekends and holidays. Requires working in multiple locations, including off campus. Must be willing to work in areas which may contain various hazardous materials including biohazards, chemical hazards, and radioisotopes, and requires wearing personal protective clothing and equipment for biohazard conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent supervisory experience, and ability to provide effective and appropriate supervision in a unionized environment. Ability to direct, delegate, set priorities, and organize a varied work force to meet tight deadlines in spite of frequent unforeseen problems.

Experience with maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and facilities including plumbing and pipe-fitting; heating, air control and filtration systems and equipment: repair change stations, exhaust and supply fans and replacing, filters.

Experience repairing, restoring and maintaining structures, counters and cabinets; repair and replace variety of animal care equipment, cage-washing equipment, refrigerators/freezers and other mechanical kitchen equipment; repair ceilings, floors, walls, roofs, and perform caulking of buildings; maintain and operate autoclaves; and instruct or lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants.

Skill and knowledge in financial planning and forecasting, and budget analysis, with the ability to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis and use the results to develop solutions to problems.

Knowledge and ability to budget finances of a multi-functional, self-supporting service activity. Skill to analyze financial reports and data with the ability to extract, compile, analyze, present and report pertinent data effectively. Demonstrated skill in monitoring expenditures based on established budget.

Demonstrated skill and ability to monitor production and quality of work, set standards, assess staff capabilities, forecast workloads, train and develop employees, evaluate the performance of employees (including matters related to substandard performance), and inspire motivation and high staff morale.

Excellent decision-making skills. Demonstrated problem-solving ability including recognizing problems, developing potential solutions, implementing appropriate solutions, and monitoring and evaluating results or progress.

Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate (orally and in writing) with administrators, staff, and vendors, with clarity, tact and diplomacy.
