Job Description

The Actuary supports our business groups profit, growth and operational objectives by performing advanced actuarial analyses in one or more of these areas: valuation/reserving, pricing, product development, research/support, business planning and finance. Provides consultation to senior managers and underwriting staff on actuarial, financial, and business planning. Manages, or participates in, projects designed to improve the quality of information, analysis, and reserving. Responsibilities:
Performs actuarial analyses for a business segment and makes recommendations concerning pricing, reserves, and/or product development; May prepare and interpret the data used to support rate filings with state departments of insurance.
Manages or participates in studies that underlie actuarial assumptions and are designed to improve risk selection, pricing, and reserve setting.
Provides consultation to senior managers and other groups on pricing, rates, and related matters, including the development and use of pricing models/tools, business planning, contingency plans, and other financial studies.
Monitors and analyzes the SBUs financial results in order to communicate the impact of strategic and operational plans. Develops and revises strategic and tactical plans as necessary to meet corporate objectives and respond to environmental changes.
Identifies data requirements for analysis, pricing tool development, reporting and decision making; Ensures the organization uses it effectively to reach profit and growth objectives.
Periodically profiles the book of business from a financial perspective to quantify levels of risk and ensure that desired quality is maintained. Provides state-specific insights to other departments, such as catastrophe management. Considers other departmetn outputs in various analyses, and communicates results to management.
Monitors developments in actuarial techniques; Researches laws and regulations; Analyzes developments in the marketplace. Represents the Company on industry and professional committees.
Bachelors degree required. Masters degree preferred.
Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation required; relevant experience typically 0-2 years post-fellowship preferred.
5-7 years progressively responsible experience, including supervisory experience
Strong analytical skills with solid understanding of all casualty actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions
Strong knowledge of insurance operations and the procedures of Financial, Underwriting, Claims, Statistical, Information Technology, Legal, and Sales departments is necessary
Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
Ability to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization.
