The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. Covered under University series concept / job specification for classification 4722. Under general direction works on operational and/or procedural assignments that require the exercise of considerable discretion and independent judgment. Understands implications of work and makes recommendations for solutions. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments.
The Administrative Assistant must be able to provide assistance in a variety of areas such as managing complex calendars, preparation of materials for meetings, data entry, front line phone contact and basic office maintenance and program coordination.
Essential duties include oral and written communication, including use of proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and standard business formats using Microsoft Office Suite applications. This position may also be project based such as large mailings or end of fiscal year processing.

High school diploma or equivalent experience.
Associate degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
Requires good verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
Requires interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other nonexempt personnel.
Requires extensive business office, administrative, and word processing skills as well as fast and accurate data entry skills.
Confidentiality a must.
Experience and knowledge of MS package including: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills essential; including: excellent spelling, grammar, proofreading and punctuation.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well independently and with others a must.
Fingerprinting may be required.
