Ambulatory Care Assistant (81395)
Education and Experience
* High school diploma or equivalent required.
* Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR seven years of clinical experience.
* Registration or Certification preferred.
* One-year experience as a Medical Assistant or patient care preferred.
* Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
Perform various duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting. Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in assigned unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Provide support to medical staff to assure patients' needs are met and to assure efficient operation of outpatient unit.
* Assist providers when possible in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
* May assure availability of test results for patient visits. Assist patients and providers with medical office visits.
* Administer prescribed medication under supervision of attending provider.
2. Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
* Obtain and document patients specimens as ordered.
* Reports abnormal test results to medical provider.
* After training and skills testing may perform assigned and/or all ordered POCT tests and maintain quality control testing and logs.
* Schedules additional ancillary testing as needed. Assists providers when possible in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
* Act as chaperone during medical examinations
3. Ensure medical records and test results are available for visit, including those from referring physicians.
* Inspect/review medical records to maintain correct order and completeness.
4. Monitors nurse call system and relays information to appropriate staff.
* Answers and telephone calls and transmits information to appropriate staff.
* Provides assistance and information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
5. Participates in Quality Assurance Program to assure quality patient services are provided.
* Comply with safety and infection control guidelines to maintain safe environment for patients and staff.
* Comply with and participate in departmental Quality Assurance Programs, Data Collection Programs, and Quality Control Programs.
* Comply with all departmental policies and procedures with regard to prescribed personnel practices and institutional objectives.
* Attend in-service programs to assure current knowledge of patient care and scheduling issues.
6. Patient-Centered Medical Home Duties
* Perform and document Medicare Wellness Assessment Screenings in Epic
* Ask open-ended questions to address and document patient s personal health goals in Epic for provider to review
* Review and respond to Best Practice Alerts according to clinic protocols
* Initiate a brief team huddle with provider at the start of each clinic session
* Pre-plan for upcoming clinic sessions by reviewing patient charts to identify needed care
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and activities
* Participate in Care Improvement Teams Meetings
* Update Health Maintenance records in patient s chart including ordering or pending orders for required updates per department and organizational protocols
* Performing any health maintenance orders such as immunization and test performed in clinic such as laboratory testing according to protocols
1. Assist with maintenance of inventory and equipment on assigned outpatient unit.
* Generate required patient charge data according to WVUHealthcare outpatient procedures.
* Assist in maintaining appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment for patient care needs by preparing orders and reporting needs to supervisor. Demonstrate knowledge of use and care of all equipment including printers, embossers, and computers.
2. May schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using computerized system according to WVUHealthcare outpatient clinic policy and procedures. Schedule and coordinate diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
3. May assure registration of patients. Collect vital information for purposes of patient identification and billing purposes and enter data into computer. Obtain charts and fee sheets necessary for patient visits. Obtain signatures from release of information and consent to treatment.
4. May assist Registration Specialist with deposit of money and with late night coverage. May assist Manager/Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software. May collect, receive, and dispense transcription and dictation to providers for correction. May process corrected notes to charts, and mail letters to patients.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient s profile and appropriate algorithms.
Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
Must be able position and/or lift patients, and stand or walk 4 to 12 hours per day.
