Job Description

The Life Sciences Division has a great opportunity for an Animal Technician II to perform all basic animal care duties necessary to maintain the animal colony. Responsible for cleanroom and washroom organization.

Under general supervision, perform various duties pertaining to animal husbandry and related equipment. Assist with daily husbandry and the general health of the laboratory animals used by scientific staff. Operate and maintain equipment and cages, transfer and handle animals, and examine them for evidence of disease or injury.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow general oral and written instructions for tasks of moderate complexity
- Make independent decisions and effectively resolve common problems applying his/her knowledge of animal husbandry
- Perform specialized tasks used in the care and handling of SPF mice
- Maintain all support equipment such as the cage washer, sterilizer, vacuum system, air conditioners, laminar flow hoods, bio-clean hood, and floor scrubber and steam cleaners.
- Oversee stockroom supplies such as animal feed, bedding, door filters, detergents, disinfectants, head covers, shoe covers, face masks, lab coats, latex gloves and sticky floor pads.
- Maintain proper record keeping of all animals
- Assist the Animal Facility Manager when needed.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the Animal Technician 3 will:
- Complete highly complex tasks in creative and effective ways
- Undertake sophisticated tasks in specialized areas of animal husbandry (e.g., germ-free, breeding colony, etc.).
- Make and complete evaluations on the health of all animals and may treat health care problems when appropriate.
- Keep accurate records, order supplies, and maintain inventory.
- Using advanced technical skills, operate and maintain equipment, make routine repairs, and act as liaison with vending companies for more complex repairs.
- Accurately maintain health monitoring forms as required by the Association for Assessment & Accreditation of a Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC.)KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
- Minimum 1 year experience in an animal care capacity. At least 1 year of related laboratory experience (e.g. work experience in a laboratory, veterinary office or similar environment with animal husbandry training.)
- Experience handling laboratory animals, particularly rodents
- Must be cognizant of animal husbandry requirements with regards to feeding, watering, temperature and general health of the animals.
- Know proper procedures for handling and transferring all animals.
- Successfully completed the curriculum, as specified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, for certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician, or equivalent education and experience.
- Ability to keep accurate records, order supplies, and maintain inventory.
- Familiarity with cage washing equipment, sterilizers, vacuum systems and air conditioners.
- Must be willing to work weekends and holidays as necessary.
- AALAS certification ALAT or LAT level.

In addition to the qualifications above, the Animal Technician 3 will have:
- Minimum 6 years of related laboratory experience (e.g. work experience in a laboratory, veterinary office or similar environment with animal husbandry training.)NOTE: This is an indefinite (career) appointment.

This position requires completion of a background check.
