Position Summary:

The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI, a division of Berkeley Lab) is looking for an Application Database Administrator to focus on business rules, database design, development, and implementation of systems for the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of production sequencing data. This position will entail writing, maintaining and debugging complex SQL. This position will be filled at the Database Administrator 3 or Database Administrator 4 level, dependent on experience.

Specific Responsibilities:

Database Administrator 3 will be performing the following under broad supervision:

*

Utilize software development skills to extract, transform and load (ETL) data from various sources into a centralized data warehouse.
*

Proficiently utilize source code management tools to control releases.
*

Administer/support front-end of Oracle database (create schemas, tables, views, materialized views, sequences, triggers, indexes, etc.) and monitor databases in support of production operations.
*

Leverage in-depth knowledge in supporting existing production Oracle databases, including those covering the data warehouse, LIMS, and project management, develop, test and stage new versions of these systems when necessary.
*

Proficiently utilize source code management tools to control releases.
*

Work with end-users to analyze and define data requirements and specifications and troubleshoot system problems.
*

Provide input and support regarding ongoing efforts to improve the design and performance of production databases.
*

Analyze and plan for anticipated changes in data capacity requirements, develop and administer data standards, policies, and procedures. Provide recommendations to improve data capacity.
*

Apply analytical skills and creativity to troubleshoot and solve highly technical, complex problems.
*

Provide secondary support for the extension of existing production applications in some/all of the following systems: sample management, library management, data management.
*

Cross-train other team members in database development and support.



In addition to above, a Database Administrator 4 will be performing the following under minimal supervision:

*

Serve as a key contributor and technical resource within the Production Informatics group.
*

Provide direction for database design, development, and administration in support of production operations.
*

Mentor other team members in database development and support.
*

Develop, implement and lead projects and project plans when necessary.



Additional Desired Responsibilities for Both Levels:

*

May occasionally be called upon to assist in other high-priority projects on an as-needed basis.
*

Create documentation and training materials.

Required Qualifications:

Database Administrator 3

*

B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific or technical field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of four to five years related experience.
*

Experience with database design, development, and performance tuning in Oracle.
*

Experience with Java and Perl and source code management tools (GIT, bitbucket, CVS, Subversion, or similar).
*

Experience with Linux Operating System, PL/SQL, bash, MySQL, Javascript, Perl/CGI, Groovy, Python.
*

Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems and software in a scientific or technical environment, e.g., University, National Laboratory, corporate R&D center or automated manufacturing facility.
*

Full life-cycle software development experience with the ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities.
*

Ability to effectively learn and apply new technology concepts in a fast paced development environment.
*

Demonstrated ability to solve highly complex problems and work independently on end-to-end implementation of technical projects.
*

Detail-oriented with strong organizational and planning skills to address user needs in an effective and timely manner.
*

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to effectively work with informatics, scientific and administrative personnel.
*

Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
*

Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment.



Required Qualifications:

Database Administrator 4

*

B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific or technical field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of eight years related experience.
*

Extensive experience with database design, development, and performance tuning in Oracle.
*

Demonstrated experience in providing guidance and direction to projects and project teams.

Additional Desired Qualifications for Both Levels:

*

Advanced degree (MS, Ph.D.)
*

Experience working with scientific users.
*

Experience working with bioinformatics tools and/or analysis techniques.

This is a 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career.

Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA.

Job may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work.
