The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. UC Merced s Center for Career and Professional Advancement won the 2015 Career Services Excellence award from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) for its innovative student professional development programs and employer relations initiatives.
The Assistant Director for Career Education is responsible for the implementation of innovative University-wide programs and initiatives that support the professional and career development of students and alumni. Acts as a liaison to the academic and co-curricular communities at UC Merced, as well as employers and community partners locally, nationally and globally. Collaboratively develops relationships and integrates services with faculty and other campus services including, but not limited to Civic Leadership and Community-based Learning, Souza Leadership Center, Undergraduate Education, Graduate Division, Admissions and Enrollment Management, Alumni Affairs, and other co-curricular programs. Plans, implements, and conducts outreach workshops, presentations, and programs to educate and inform students, faculty/staff, and administrators about career programs and services. Coaches students and alumni on all areas of career development and career management including resume writing, interviewing and presentation skills, job/internship search techniques and networking. Assists with the department web and social media presence through all channels. In close collaboration with the director, will determine how best to collect, analyze, and tell the narrative of the Center's success to both internal and external stakeholders. Represents the Center at meetings, conferences, and on committees, as needed or as requested by the Director. Serves on the center's leadership team and participates in developing strategic goals, objectives and initiatives.
The Assistant Director oversees approximately 4 FTE, plus contract staff and student workers. May be required to work occasional nights and weekends, as needed.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum three year's relevant experience in career services, recruiting, higher education, training, human resources, business, education or equivalent combination of experience required.
Master's degree required. Degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Human Resource Management, MBA, Counseling, professional degree or related preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of the administrative structure and academic programs of a research university, with specific knowledge of student career development required.
Excellent supervisory experience in a service-oriented environment required.
Honed skills in collaboration and project management required.
Excellent career coaching and facilitation skills to engage students required.
Ability to navigate, prioritize and effectively communicate with complex network of internal and external constituents required.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment and act with discretion required.
Knowledge of program assessment, evaluation methodology and survey techniques required.
Ability to identify needs of diverse populations and create programs and services designed to meet their unique requirements required.
Must be a self-starter and able to work independently preferred.
Ability to take risks, assess and shift priorities and adapt to rapidly changing environment preferred.
Ability to effectively counsel graduate students as well as alumni with more advanced career development issues preferred.
Familiarity with technology and its role enhancing the delivery of career services to students and alumni preferred.
Familiarity with social media preferred.
