Assistant Director of Custodial & Housekeeping Services

The Assistant Director of Custodial & Housekeeping Services is a member of the UCR Facilities Services team that oversees the custodial and housekeeping operations to ensure and provide a clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for all members of the campus community. Provides direct supervision, leadership and guidance to two (2) Custodial Services Supervisors, and provides support and indirect supervision to a work force consisting of 164 custodial and housekeeping staff. Establishes directives, organizational design and structure that effectively and efficiently accomplish departmental and unit goals and objectives. Establishes and maintains a strong customer focus work environment and promotes a cooperative teamwork philosophy to promote the development of new service and innovative approaches to improve custodial and housekeeping services for the campus. Manages the custodial and housekeeping annual operating budget, encompassing all aspects of financial management from long range development planning to the implementation of strategic operational changes to maximize efficiencies, expenditure tracking, and forecasting short term budgetary requirements. Ensures safety procedures and protocols are established and maintained, ensuring compliance with state, federal and UC regulations. Responsible for operational administration and personnel management. Provides operational support to other Facilities Services units as necessary. Reporting to the division of Business & Administrative Services (BAS), Facilities Services is one of the largest departments at UC Riverside employing nearly 400 career employees. Facilities Services provides exceptional service in maintaining an environment conducive of teaching, learning, living, working and research for the entire campus community. The department maintains buildings, facilities and landscape totaling over 6 million square feet across 1,350 acres of campus. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Valid Driver License.
LEED Green Associate
Blood borne pathogen and sharps disposal training.
Minimum of 9 years of related experience.
Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check through the DOJ and FBI.
Must be available for on-call emergencies.
Must wear and properly display University issued ID badge.
Ability to operate University vehicles for business and operational needs.
Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Working knowledge of and ability for decision making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and perform operations analysis, and quality control analysis.
Working knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services.
Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, multi-task and time management.
Working knowledge and skill in effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
Ability to ensure that custodial and housekeeping staff provide quick, accurate and appropriate response to both routine custodial/housekeeping issues as well as emergency response to more urgent situations.
Ability to ensure that quality and customer service standards are communicated, implemented, continually monitored and improved upon.
Ability to motivate and inspire custodial and housekeeping staff to provide the highest level of service to campus constituents.
Broad knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and internal policies.
Knowledge and experience in fiscal management. Ability to produce and provide meaningful reports on budgetary status, operational costs/expenses, staffing, inventory/equipment, schedules, metrics, etc.
Working knowledge in the care and use of power equipment, hazardous materials, biohazardous materials and clean room policies and procedures. Ability to provide staff guidance and properly train on use of equipment, materials and safety policies and practices.
Proven ability to work with diverse populations.
Knowledge of human resources procedures, including staffing, hiring, training, disciplinary action, termination, and performance management.
Proficient computer/technical skills.
Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with personnel management in a collective bargaining unit.
Working knowledge and/or experience of UC systems, polices, procedures and regulations.
Knowledge of sustainability programs, U.S. Green Building Council, LEED requirements and reporting.
