Job Description
The Assistant Manager of Patient Care Services is assigned to a designated clinical area to support patientfamily focused, high performancehigh commitment care by: defining and achieving standards for quality patient care; developing, managing, and evaluating area based work team performance. Works under the guidance and direction of the Manager to develop, implement and evaluate systems that promote cost effective, quality patient care is provided. bKey Functions and Expected Performances:b 1. bLeading: Managing Vision and Purpose, Motivating and Influencingb a. Works with medical and administrative staff to operationalize the mission, strategic plan, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans, and policies for the PCC, Hospitals and Vanderbilt Clinic. b. Manages multiple projectson-going work activities (timelines, work plans, deliverables) and maintains alignment with strategic plan and vision. c. Recognizes and rewards desired performance. Supports retention of staff through the use of techniques consistent with Elevate framework. 2. bCommunication: Active Listening and Communicating Clearly (verbal and written)b a. Monitors and maintains an environment of trust, fairness, consistency and confidentiality with team members and with other internal and external customers consistent with VUMC Credo. b. Listens and seeks clarification through Elevate rounding. Completes rounding log and uses findings to develop solutions to identified issues within scope of accountability. c. Shares knowledge across multiple disciplines and across departments. Represents needs and interests of direct reports to all levels of the leadership structure. Communicates effectively orally and in writing. 3. bStandards of Accountability: Accountability, Clinical Quality Management and Service Orientationb a. Manages the performance of direct reports through goal setting, ongoing assessment and coaching to achieve goals. Performs formal evaluation of staff. b. Ensures the delivery of quality patient care by holding staff accountable to patient care and regulatory standards. Interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff and patientsfamilies. c. Ensures changes in clinical assignments are based on patient care needs and demonstrated staff competencies. d. Implements and monitors programs that promote a safe, therapeutic, customer-friendly environment. Responds promptly to patient, family and staff concerns seeking to bring issues to resolution. Monitors satisfaction outcomes and coaches care team members as required. e. Acts as clinical leader and facilitates education for staff on clinical standards; routinely provides guidancecoaching to subordinatespeers within clinical specialty(ies). f. Supports evidence based changes to clinical practice. Utilizes available data sources and monitors against established internal and external benchmarks. Implements area specific quality plan linked to institutional quality goals. Uses appropriate processes and models to monitor and proactively manage risk. Ensures care is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable, patient centered and evidence based. g. Inpatient: Supports staff participation in planning and managing patient flow through rounding and discharge planning. Coaches staff to collaborate with the healthcare team regarding bed management to ensure appropriate patient placement based on clinical needs. Outpatientprocedural: Measures and contributes to improvement in patient access, cycle times, and patient wait times. Coaches staff on access, cycle time and wait time improvement strategies and practices. h. Implements area specific policies and practice guidelines in accordance with VUMC policy and regulatory standards using standardized tools and instruments. i.
