ASSISTANT PHYSICIST - EXPERIMENTAL HEP
JOB ID 786 DATE POSTED 08/31/2016
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research. The Physics Department currently has an opportunity for a full-time Assistant Physicist.
The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the Phase-I & HL-LHC Upgrade Projects, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as one of the U.S. ATLAS Support Centers. The Omega Group at BNL has major responsibilities in the operations of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter, Cathode Strip Chambers in the muon spectrometer, trigger and software development, and leads several physics analyses. The group has leading roles in ATLAS Phase-I upgrade projects (Liquid Argon calorimeter trigger readout, Muon New Small Wheel, and Trigger/Data Acquisition) and the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter readout, and Trigger/Data Acquisition). There is a strong physics analysis program in searches for new physical phenomena (supersymmetry, Higgs, and dark matter) and in measurements of Standard Model processes (diboson, Higgs, and top quark production) with the data collected in LHC Run 2 and in preparation for the HL-LHC.
The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening to join the ongoing effort on the ATLAS experiment at the Assistant Physicist level; outstanding candidates will be considered at higher levels. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong interest in the LHC physics and experimental program and experience in detector development for hadron collider experiments.
