ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR (LPSOE) OPENING
DEPARTMENT OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE AT UC SAN DIEGO
The Department of Cognitive Science http://cogsci.ucsd.edu within the Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. We invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related fields. We interpret these areas broadly and invite strong candidates in related specializations. Potential fields include social computing, design, interactive systems, and gestural and natural interfaces. We are especially interested in candidates who will flourish in a Cognitive Science Department, and whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity within an academic setting. Joint appointment with other departments can be considered where appropriate.
The Assistant Teaching Professor is also known within the UC as an LPSOE (Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). The LPSOE series parallels that of the research-focused series but with emphasis upon excellence in teaching and other instruction-related activities. Individuals in the position are expected to provide outstanding teaching, as well as to engage in professional activity (including research on pedagogy) and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, tenure-paralleling security of employment.
The UCSD Department of Cognitive Science was the first of its kind in the world, and, as part of an exceptional scientific community, continues to influence the field it helped to create. The department is truly interdisciplinary, with a faculty whose interests span anthropology, computer science, design, human development, human-computer interaction, information science, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and vision. We welcome candidates to apply whose PhD or M.F.A. or equivalent degree are in these disciplines. Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.F.A. or equivalent degree in their area of expertise or completion of degree by the start date of the position. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience with multiple methodologies is highly valued.
The preferred candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. Candidates will be favored who will contribute to instruction-related activities (e.g. conducting TA training, curriculum development, creation of instructional materials including online instruction, employ new technologies) at the campus, statewide and national level.
Candidates should submit, via online application to https://apolrecruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01195: (a) a short cover letter describing background and interests, (b) vita, (c) teaching statement, (d) documentation of teaching excellence (e.g. links to instructional materials developed by candidate, summaries of teaching evaluations, on-line instructional segments), (e) statement of scholarly activities [which may include research on pedagogical focus], (f) reprints of up to four representative publications/scholarly articles particularly with a pedagogical focus, (g) personal statement summarizing their contributions (or potential contributions) to diversity and leadership (http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/Faculty-Applicant-C2D-info.asp), and (h) at least three letters of reference commenting on the candidate s pedagogical skills, among other attributes (provide referee name, title, address and email) to https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01195.
Applications received by December 9, 2016 will be given full consideration. However, positions will remain open until filled.
Appointments will begin July 1, 2017 and salary is commensurate with experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
