JOB DESCRIPTIONJob Description: The MIT-Broad Foundry is a new synthetic biology facility focused on streamlining genetic design. To do this, we develop high-throughput methods for the construction, and analysis of complex genetic programs.
We are in search of an Automation Engineer to convert manual molecular biology techniques into high-throughput automated workflows. * Develop automation programs/protocols for molecular biology and biochemistry processes * Assist with assay development and optimization (i.e., bench work) * Prepare SOP documentation * Coordinate and conduct validation efforts on generated workflows * Track and evaluate process efficiency and failure modes * Identify and recommend necessary robotic and analysis instrumentation to facilitate automation * Maintain related instrumentation * Provide essential software and hardware training on necessary equipment to end users * Attend group meetings share project plans, status and recommendations
* EDUCATION- Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Engineering or a related field, Masters Degree a plus. Minimum of 3 years laboratory experience post degree required (industry or academic) 5 years preferred.
* Expert in automation including experience with: liquid handling, colony picking, plate handling, microfluidics, microscopy etc. * Previous experience with scripting on Hamilton Star and Agilent Bravo instruments required * Experience with Molecular Biology techniques including essential nucleic acid manipulation techniques (extraction, cloning, assembly and analysis) required * Experience with Biochemistry assay execution * Highly organized and able to simultaneously maintain accurate records for multiple projects * Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff * Must be able to work effectively in a team setting yet also be motivated to work independently on primary tasks and make decisions based on training, experience and resources * Experience with programming and scripting to develop required protocols-- including languages such as Java, python, perl, MySQL, LIMS, LabView etc. * Experience with synthetic biology is a significant advantage
Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and sample prep a plus
