GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The BMT Quality and Safety RN is responsible for oversight of the quality, safety and specialized regulatory needs of the BMT program. This individual is also responsible for the coordination of laboratory and clinical program data for ongoing FACT and Joint Commission accreditation. This role will be responsible for interfacing with the inpatient clinician team, outpatient clinician team, BMT donor coordinators, processing laboratory administration and staff and will be integrated into the larger MGH Cancer Center Quality and Safety Team.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Management and oversight for issues around patient safety, quality management, quality measurement and analysis, informatics, reporting of quality and safety of the program.

* Participation in care redesign projects and clinical compliance and process improvement activities within the program.

* The BMT quality and safety RN will have a key role in the measurement of quality and safety programs designated by the MGH/MGPO as they pertain to the BMT program.

* Active in chart review and measurement activities.

* Review of safety events and RCA activity associated activities.

* The BMT quality and safety RN will work collaboratively with physicians, NPs/PAs, nurses and other healthcare professionals engaged in the care of the BMT population in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

* S/he will participate in abstracting information from paper charts and electronic systems, maintaining up-to-date and orderly records & data bases of results, and identifying factors involved in variances from norms. This work will require high accuracy and attention to detail, since it directly feeds reporting to FACT and directly impacts the certification on the program.

* Coordinate, compile and submit requested documentation in preparation for FACT accreditation inspection, follow-up, and yearly summary reports.

* Coordinate correspondence with outside agencies and accrediting bodies

* Review and assist with completion of Requests for Information (RFI)

* Review and revise the quality management audit schedule at least annually in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders in the BMT program.

* Develop audits to track and trend for errors/accidents/deviations and to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.

* Work with other departments and disease centers to ensure compliance with FDA, FACT, JC and institutional regulations and standards to meet BMT program requirements.

* Review incident reports and deviations. Assess corrective actions to ensure adequacy.

* Review new and revised policies and procedures to ensure compliance with FDA regulations and FACT requirements. Approve policies and procedures for the clinical program.



SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

* Experience with National Hospital Quality Measures (NHQM) highly desirable

* 3 years of experience as a nurse working with BMT patients.

* Strong organization and interpersonal skills, with a capacity for analyzing and presenting data.

* High degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.

* Experience with performance improvement methods, including statistical concepts and applications.

* Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint applications), with ability to utilize spreadsheet and graphic programs to produce bar graphs and charts, are preferred for this position.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

* Current Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)


EDUCATION:

* Minimum Required: Bachelor's Degree

* Preferred: Master's Degree


EXPERIENCE:

Required:

* Clinical experience with the BMT/Leukemia patient population.

* Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications), with the ability to utilize spreadsheet and graphic programs to produce bar graphs and charts.

Preferred:

* Experience with performance improvement methods, including statistical concepts and applications.
