The Benefits Review Specialist conducts independent reviews of disputed disability and life claims determinations in a timely, accurate and objective manner; communicate decisions to claimants, beneficiaries and/or their legal representatives, and Benefits management; make recommendations for improvement to contribute to appropriate benefit determinations, reserve accuracy and claim management; provide responsive and caring customer service to claimants, beneficiaries, policyholders, and other internal and external customers.
*This position can sit in our Portland, OR office or White Plains, NY office. Employees in our White Plains office receive a 20% geo differential.
Conduct independent reviews of disputed claims which involve a range of medical, vocational and/or contractual issues; identify file/fact discrepancies and outstanding issues and coordinate the receipt of additional documentation as necessary to allow for reasonable and well-supported claims determinations.
Work with ISG Legal Department to clarify issues, prepare files for litigation, and resolve or settle disputed claims. Communicate decisions to claimants/beneficiaries or their representatives, as well as to the appropriate Division personnel. Provide feedback to the ARU Supervisor and/or Benefits Supervisor with regard to training or claims administration issues identified in contested claims reviewed; identify areas of need and recommend methods for quality improvement.
Approve claim determinations and claim action plans as recommended by less seasoned staff; provide training for the team, department and individuals.
Education: Degree in business, science or related field
Experience: Three years experience as a Benefits Review Examiner or Disability Benefits Analyst, or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
Skills & Knowledge: Ability to analyze multiple, complex, legally sensitive claim issues and make accurate judgment calls; interpret decisions and contract provisions in litigious settings; apply knowledge of Benefits operations to assess claim administration quality; learn and retain changing procedures, methodology and legal issues related to claim administration; report results and make recommendations for improvement.
Professional Certification Required: FLMI or CEBS coursework and/or certification preferred.
