Stanford University is hiring a University HR Service Team Specialist to support the faculty and staff who make up our innovative and diverse workforce.

As part of the University HR Service team, you will be responsible for supporting daily activities and special projects related to employee benefits for over 16,000 faculty, staff and retirees. This position provides online, in-person and telephone support to employees while working closely with vendors on the oversight and facilitation of benefits services.

Success in this role means working in a fast-paced, high volume environment while communicating clearly with employees on benefits programs and resources. This includes, but is not limited to case management, processing enrollment elections, answering questions and provide guidance on Stanford Benefits administrative processes and guidelines, in-person meetings and trouble-shooting escalated matters.

Facilitate the daily administration of health, life, retirement, and/or disability and leave programs and associated administration processes. Serve as a health, life, retirement and/or disability and leave subject matter expert in responding to and resolving employee benefits issues and inquiries.


Apply subject matter expertise in resolving and responding to employee benefits issues/inquiries by phone, email, face-to-face (eligibility, coverage, enrollment, etc.). Utilize web-based case management and knowledge application for research and documentation when answering employee benefit questions.

Participate in compliance and/or case reviews.

Assist in the design and delivery of training forums for current and new specialists relative to health, life, retirement, and/or disability and leave benefit programs and procedures.

Participate in the design and revision of benefit communications and training materials.

Participate in workgroups to develop and/or contribute to work process redesign.

Oversee HR and vendor management for assigned caseload.

Represent Stanford at health fairs, etc.

Provide training support for live calls; coach and mentor less experienced specialists in workgroup.

May perform one or more of the following:
- Perform employee benefits orientations.
- Determine solutions and implement procedures for responding to customer service requests.
- Handle complex cases and/or issues relating to faculty and senior staff and propose recommendation and solutions.
- Determine methods and procedures for new assignments.
-Perform systems testing.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and four years of relevant benefits experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong problem solving and decision making skills.

Strong customer service experience and a proven ability to meet performance standards.

Strong organizational and case management skills.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to interpret the various health or disability plans and associated documentation.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate complex benefit concepts in an understanding and empathetic manner.

Uses authority, knowledge and judgment to respond to complicated requests.

Presentation and public speaking skills.

Strong computer skills such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); PeopleSoft preferred.

Knowledge of employee benefits programs and the relevant laws and regulations that govern them, including medical, dental, vision, life, short and long term disability, COBRA, ERISA, cafeteria plans, flexible spending accounts, and retiree medical benefits.

Certifications and Licenses:


Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk based computer tasks, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.

Rarely kneel/crawl.
