Lawrence Berkeley National Labs Workforce Development & Education office is looking for a Student Assistant Science Instructor to provide instruction for the Berkeley Lab Adventure Zone in Elementary Science (BLAZES) program, refurbish instructional materials for the Berkeley Lab In School Settings (BLISS) program, and assist as needed with other relevant K-12 initiatives managed by the Labs Workforce Development & Education office. The BLAZES program brings 5th grade students from surrounding school districts to the Lab to participate in hands-on activities about properties of matter, a tour of the Advanced Light Source facility, and a demonstration of liquid nitrogen. The BLISS program provides kits of hands-on materials to Lab employees for use in local schools and community groups.

Important: This is a student assistant position, requiring full-time undergraduate enrollment at an accredited community college or university. Eligible applicants must be able to commit to working the same two days each week from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM from Monday - Thursday.

Specific Responsibilities:


Verify that materials are ready for instruction.

Meet and welcome each group.

Provide instruction for the overall visit.

Organize each group into breakout groups for activities that are facilitated by Lab scientist volunteers.

Lead tours of the Advanced Light Source or other facilities at Berkeley Lab.

Conduct a liquid nitrogen demonstration.

Ensure that each group is successfully transported off the site.

Communicate any material needs or issues that may have arisen during the program.

Refurbish instructional kits for BLAZES or BLISS activities using material supply lists.

Participate as a facilitator for other K-12 programs or events (occasionally, TBD).

Required Qualifications:


Must be over the age of 18.

Must be able to commit to working the same 2 days each week from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM from Monday - Thursday.

Must be currently enrolled and actively attending as a full time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university.

Must be able to lift 5 to 10 pounds regularly, 20 25 pounds occasionally.

Ability to work collaboratively with staff and other Lab employees.

Ability to work independently and take initiative.

Experience working with children, preferably leading science activities with elementary students.

Knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics content.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Basic knowledge of office software (MS Word, Excel, Google applications) with ability to prepare correspondence and keep accurate records.

Preferred Qualifications:


Valid drivers license.

Ability to work occasionally on weekends.

This is a variable temporary Student Assistant position with multiple openings.

Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.

This position requires completion of a background check.
