JOB DESCRIPTIONGENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision, following established procedures and policies, performs various analyses on body fluids using complex instrumentation and/or standard manual methods. A professional level of knowledge is necessary to assure that results are interpreted accurately.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Performs routine and complex analytical procedures on all body fluids using complex instrumentation and/or established manual methods according to laboratory policies.
2.Assumes responsibility for a workstation.
3.Prepares samples and reagents according to laboratory policies.
4.Performs routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
5.Performs quality control testing according to laboratory policies.
6.Responsible for the accuracy and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies.
7.Refers unusual results, occurrences and instrument problems to the appropriate laboratory staff and documents all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Hematology Laboratory.
8.Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns according to laboratory policies.
9.Participates in internal and external continuing education programs.
10.Is responsible to be aware of JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
11.Performs support services as assigned and other duties as required.
1.Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university and 2 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty
2.Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495.
3.Two-year laboratory experience at Brigham & Womens Hospital required or 10 years of experience in an accredited laboratory.
1.Must have a high level of analytical ability and judgment to relate test results to normal and pathological states.
2.Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture and manual dexterity sufficient to work with delicate instruments.
3.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, physicians, other hospital personnel and other outside contacts.
4.Must have neat and orderly work habits.
5.Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.
6.Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.
