The Department of Neurosurgery conducts clinical research across a large range of disciplines including neuro-oncology, neuroradiology, cerebrovascular, functional brain disorders, spine and peripheral nerve, neuro trauma and image-guided neurosurgery. Our program is also affiliated with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for all cancer related clinical trials. Under the supervision of the clinical trials project manager, the research assistant will provide support to multiple Principal Investigators conducting clinical research on varying neurological diseases and disorders.

Working under the supervision of the clinical trials project manager and following established policies and procedures, provides assistance on clinical research studies. May be responsible for the following activities: recruiting and evaluating subjects for studies, collecting and organizing patient data, scheduling subjects for study visits, performing clinical tests such as phlebotomy, EKGs, etc, maintaining and updating data generated by the study.


Employees may not perform all duties described, but should have the ability to perform them if necessary.

1. Provides assistance on clinical research studies as per study guidelines and protocols.

2. Recruits and evaluates potential study subjects. Per protocol instruction, conducts telephone interviews or schedules patient for study visit and screening. May be required to perform clinical tests such as phlebotomy, EKGs, neurocognative tests, etc.

3. Interacts with subjects with regard to study, including subject education, procedural instruction, follow-up. May serve as a liaison between subject and other research staff including the sponsor, IRB, study PI and clinical trials project manager.

4. Responsible for collecting data and maintaining patient information database for study. May be required to input data, do minimum analysis and run various reports. Maintains subjects records as part of record keeping function.

5. Ensure compliance with the Partners IRB, Dana-Farbers IRB and other federal and institutional guidelines. Assists with research billing and study fund maintenance on assigned clinical trials.

6. Responsible for coordinating study start up procedures and addressing logistical concerns brought up by pharmacy, radiology, industry sponsors, billing compliance and other collaborating departments like neurology, neuro-oncology.

7. Answers any phone calls and inquiries regarding study protocol. Refers participants when appropriate to project manager or clinical staff.

8. Assists with regulatory documentation as directed by project manager.

9. Monitors and sets up any needed equipment.

10. Maintains inventory and orders supplies when necessary.

11. All other duties, as assigned

12. Position may require some on-call work..

13. Position may require some domestic travel.


B.S. or B.A.

New graduate with relevant course or project work.

Prior experience working in translational or clinical research preferred, but not required.

Experience working in a healthcare setting preferred.

Available for some on-call work if required by clinical trials

Available for minimal domestic travel to other Partners Institutes

Experience with Power Point, Excel and other Microsoft office programs

Excellent interpersonal skills are required for working with the study participants.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of clinical research protocols.

Knowledge of computer programs, databases, etc.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.

Careful attention to detail.

Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for subjects rights and individual needs.
