JOB DESCRIPTIONThe New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is seeking to hire a qualified City Research Scientist IV-B to serve as a lead Scientist of clinical test and assay validation in the Virology Section.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
The successful candidate will fill a leading role in clinical test and assay validation in the Virology Section as well as being cross-trained as part of a cross functional key staff role.
--Supervise high level critical and complex diagnostic testing and reporting for a wide range of viruses using molecular methods as outlined by the standard operating.
--Lead validation/verification and implementation of new assays.
--Respond to public health emergency by providing surge team training and organizing urgent testing.
--Trouble-shoot and problem solve in the case of discordant results.
--Ensure all quality parameters have been met including quality control and quality assurance for all testing systems.
--Ensure staff compliance to all testing procedures.
--Assist in preparation of grant funding and budget, as well as maintaining adequate inventory.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
--Candidate must be able to demonstrate experience in state-of-the-art complex testing in the area of responsibility
--Background and experience in molecular assays.
--Must exhibit excellent written, organizational and interpersonal skills
--Must possess or be eligible for a NYSDOH Laboratory Director COQ (Certificate of Qualification); and must be qualified as a Laboratory Supervisor per NYSDOH, Part 58-1.4 of 10 NYCRR Clinical Laboratory Regulation.
The federal government provides student loan forgiveness through its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) to all qualifying public service employees. Working with the DOHMH qualifies you as a public service employee and you may be able to take advantage of this program while working full-time and meeting the program's other requirements.
