Department Description

At UCSF Medical Center, our Clinical Laboratory supports the inpatient population of our tertiary care hospital, an Emergency Department and outpatient clinics including Hematology Oncology.

The Hematology Lab provides a complete menu of testing for hematologic disorders, coagulopathies, transplant surgeries, pediatrics and neonatal care. We provide a stimulating and fast paced environment for Clinical Laboratory Scientists, with in house education opportunities.


Job Summary

* Oversees workflow of the lab to ensure turn-around times are met.

* Troubleshoots or investigates malfunctioning Molecular Dx procedures and analyzers.

* Aids in the development of new procedures or modify existing procedures under the direction of a project leader.

* Performs lab compliance procedures..

* Establishes and maintains QC materials and data.

* Assists in training of new CLS s and CLS trainees.

* Works as a bench CLS as needed.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Work Environment

* Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.

* Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.

* Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.

* Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.

* Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor of Science degree

* A valid California Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Technologist license, Clinical Genetics Molecular Biologist license or a temporary license pending passing the next scheduled licensure examination

* Two years of recent experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist

* Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision

* Assumes responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review. As requested by a Molecular Dx Supervisor, evaluates new procedures and makes recommendations

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required

Preferred Qualifications

* Prefer five years of Molecular Dx experience, to include, but not exclusive of, experience in:

* High volume hospital clinical laboratory

* Current automated equipment/methods in the area of specialty

* Development of new assays

* Writing SOP

* Teaching, including orientation and training of employee

* Word processing, spreadsheet and database applications

Licensure/Certification

* A valid California Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Technologist license, Clinical Genetics Molecular Biologist license or a temporary license pending passing the next scheduled licensure examination
