Department Description

At UCSF Medical Center, our Clinical Laboratory supports the inpatient population of our tertiary care hospital, an Emergency Department and outpatient clinics.

We provide a stimulating and fast paced environment for Clinical Laboratory Scientists, with in house education opportunities.

Job Summary

Responsible for performing research and development experiments for new testing assay projects and products in collaboration with the Clinical Lab Department Section Supervisors. Uses professional concepts in accordance with company objectives to investigate, evaluate, validate, and implement new testing methods and instrumentation in the various sections of the Clinical Laboratory. Regularly exercises technical discretion in design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project goals. Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.

Has full understanding of and ability to apply established principles, theories and concepts in area of responsibility, together with a working knowledge of related disciplines of clinical laboratories including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics. Projects require familiarity with current scientific literature together with capability to select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions within broadly defined practices and procedures.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Required Qualifications

* Minimum two years hands-on experience with clinical testing procedures

* Bachelor s degree in Science

* Knowledge of chemistry, biology, hematology, microbiology, molecular and immunology at a BS level

* Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with CLS s, physicians, and nursing personnel

* Analytical skills necessary in order to understand test results

* Familiarity with laboratory science and ability to work with instruments, including experience with method/instrument development or evaluation in clinical testing

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required

Preferred Qualifications

* Three years clinical laboratory experience with testing procedures in advance technology like DNA sequencing, PCR, advance molecular testing, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) including at least one year of method/instrument development or evaluation in clinical testing

Licensure/Certification

* State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License
