Job Summary

Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital & Clinics is a teaching hospital providing inpatient (IP) services to adults in psychiatric crisis.

The IP social worker is responsible for the timely completion of psychosocial assessments, effective discharge planning and regular family meetings. It is the responsibility of the IP social worker to take the lead in establishing and implementing discharge plans that support patient well-being and maintain patient flow off the unit. The IP social worker participates in teaching trainees, organization-wide and service based performance improvement projects and special projects as requested.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Work Environment

* Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.

* Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.

* Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.

* Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.

* Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

Required Qualifications

* Masters degree in social work, counseling, or related field from and accredited university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

* Demonstrated knowledge of mental health system in SF bay area, and demonstrated ability to navigate mental health system to organize services for patients and family members

* Demonstrated ability to provide timely and accurate psychosocial assessments, case management and discharge planning to a caseload of high-risk severely mentally ill adults

* Demonstrated ability to complete psychosocial/functional assessments, mental status examinations, comprehensive treatment development, and discharge planning

* Excellent documentation and clinical skills

* Ability to prioritize, work independently, excellent follow-up, work well under pressure and meet deadlines

* Experience with populations diverse in ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation

* Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills

* Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability

* Demonstrated ability to assess suicide and violence risk

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with severely mentally ill, homeless, and dual diagnosis populations

* Completed training in verbal de-escalation, PRO-ACT or similar module
