JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Program in Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Chicago is accepting applications from poets for a full-time, four-year non-renewable Collegiate Assistant Professor position as a Harper Schmidt Fellow beginning September 1, 2017. The Fellows are members of the College Faculty whose primary responsibility is to teach in the general education (Core) program. Teaching duties will involve five introductory core courses per year in Creative Writing and an Advanced Workshop in Poetry for students taking the Major in Creative Writing to be launched in 2017-18. Fellows participate with other Creative Writing faculty in the full life of the program, including curriculum development, academic advising of undergraduate students, and other committee work. A Fellow is eligible for one quarter of research sabbatical in the third year of residence. The annual salary for 2017-18 will be $67,650.
An MFA or PhD, or equivalent professional experience is necessary, as are a deep commitment to teaching and a publication record including at least one book of poetry on a significant publisher's list.
At least one year of experience teaching at the college level is preferred with the interest and ability to communicate both within the specific disciplinary area as well as across a range of critical and literary practice. We seek experienced and diverse applicants whose intellectual and creative interests are bridge-building within the context of an intense and rigorous liberal arts college.
