Job Description

As an Operating Manager in Agilent Laboratories, the central research organization in Agilent, you will manage researchers involved in the investigation or development of new computational biology and informatics technologies aimed at breakthroughs in life science and chemical analysis measurement and analysis processes and products. You will ensure the appropriate integration of this work with other internal and external teams. The ideal candidate will have a track record of building and supervising high-performing research teams, including demonstrated success in energizing and motivating people around long-term strategies as well as near-term priorities. You will have had experience working with and leading MS and PhD level scientists and engineers.
Responsibilities include:
- Participating as part of Agilent Laboratories leadership team to manage the Labs' research portfolio, set strategic directions, and promote a culture that supports risk taking, interdisciplinary problem-solving and order of magnitude contributions to technology performance and/or usability
- Leading the development of a strategic technology roadmap and project proposals, aligned within Agilent Laboratories' overall strategies, for which software implementations enable breakthrough capabilities for Agilent's customers
- Establishing and maintaining close coordination with the rest of Agilent Laboratories and with the business units within Agilent's Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis organizations.
- Balancing a technology focus with future market or business needs and objectives
- Coordinating both near term and long term research programs
- Coaching and developing geographically distributed team members to expand the team's capabilities and professional satisfaction.
- Create a high-performance, inclusive work environment that prizes diversity and recognizes individual contributions
- Foster initiative and creativity by allowing individual freedom to attain well-defined objectives
Qualifications:
Musts:
- Ph.D. or equivalent in computer science, applied mathematics, bio-engineering, or quantitative life sciences, with 5+ years' relevant research experience and a track record of demonstrated people leadership ability
- Successful contribution to and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams spanning informatics and/or applied quantitative science along with life science and/or chemical analysis
- Demonstrated success supervising a team of technical professionals (PhD and MS level engineers or scientists) engaged in novel research
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Desired:
- Involvement in at least one project that led to a successful commercial product introduction
- Experience with software engineering, including commercial software design and development
- Experience with life science laboratory methods
- Experience with analytical instrumentation
- Experience supervising multidisciplinary research teams
