Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs Computational Research Division (CRD) has an exciting opportunity for a Computer Science Engineer (CSE) with strong web development and/or backend skills interested in working on exciting science research projects to join the Data Science and Technology Department (DST) and be a part of addressing the next generation of science research problems. This position will be filled at a level II or III, dependent on experience.

High quality user interfaces and tools are now critical to all areas of scientific investigation. You will join the research and development team on a wide array of research and development projects. This position will involve work in a results-driven research environment on a wide array of user-facing software development problems.

DST develops software and tools to enable scientists to address complex and large-scale computing and data analysis problems beyond what is possible today. DST engages in partnerships with scientists to understand their computing and data analysis challenges and develop leading-edge solutions that fit the needs of the scientists. Current research areas and projects include workflow tools, user-level abstractions for exascale data discovery, computationally driven discovery of new materials, processing pipelines for astronomical data, and using experimental data to understand the impacts of climate change.

Specific Responsibilities - Level II:


Conduct user research.

Plan, code, and deploy web applications.

Develop web interfaces for browsing scientific datasets.

Build and test interfaces.

Perform continuous testing and integration.

In addition to the above, Level III - Specific Responsibilities:


Coordinate and/or lead the development and science teams on requirements and features.

Participate and coordinate the software development process for the teams.

Present to audiences within and outside the lab.

Required Qualifications - Level II:


Bachelors degree and four years of related experience, at least three years experience as a software engineer, UI designer, or UX researcher and/or a combination of experience and education.


Skilled in a high-level programming language.

Proficiency with Javascript.

Experience with user research methods, HTML and CSS, Web 2.0 technologies (jQuery and AJAX), UNIX and/or Windows tools.

Self-motivated with excellent communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

In addition to the above, Level III - Required Qualifications:


Bachelors degree and six years of related experience, at least five years of experience of a software engineer, UI designer or UX researcher or equivalent background and/or a combination of experience and education.

Skilled in a scripting language.


Demonstrated experience with Web 2.0 technologies (jQuery and AJAX), as well as UNIX and/or Windows tools.

Background leading a team of developers, or extensive experience acting as an independent and self-directed member of a large development team.

Experience with the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.

Hands on experience with UNIX and/or Windows tools.

Additional Desired Qualifications for Both Levels:


Experience in the following:


Translating user-provided requirements into robust end products.

Performing user needs assessments and designing user interfaces.

System administration in current Linux, MacOS, and Windows variants.


Expertise with web services technologies and REST as well as data analyses and visualization tools.

Background with real-world agile build, test, and deployment practices.
