JOB DESCRIPTION

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

This position is responsible for the effective implementation, continuation, and assessment of company-wide safety initiatives. Fosters a culture of safety and leadership within the company and assures implementation of our safety and health policy procedures. Leads and develops a safety team for implementation of strategies and contributions, to ensure an accident-free work environment. Establishes performance measures for the company's safety programs, systems and procedures, by providing technical assistance in the identification, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. These programs are used as the basis for all training, on-site protocols and safety compliance on every project for employees and sub-contractors alike. Oversees and directs organizational safety and compliance with local, state, and federal health, and environmental regulations on assigned sites, and assist in evaluating risk associated with new business. This person will work closely with cross-functional teams in a decision-support capacity.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Stays current with emerging issues, new developments and regulations in the field of Safety and Health, and implements changes in the company's program as needed
*

Oversee compliance of new hire orientation and training for employees regarding safety
*

Creates a working atmosphere that promotes openness and a high level of enthusiasm and morale in the field
*

Able to recognize onsite risk factors and take appropriate action with firmness and tact
*

Performs periodic safety training for Superintendents and field employees as well as train and mentor all staff, as needed
*

Develops job-specific safety plans, schedule jobsite visits and safety audits
*

Develops and maintains training program, procedures for root causation analysis, and incident investigation protocols and reviews implications to ensure compliance, as well as provide flexibility based on operational requirements
*

Develop candidates for safety representative roles
*

Oversees the control/elimination of hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee practices through site visits, safety plans, and education of all supervisory personnel
*

Provides oversight to safety performance measurement reporting
*

Identifies target areas of opportunity for safety and health improvement in coordination with leadership
*

Develops broad-based Safety & Health programs with goals and objectives to mitigate risk
*

Assures development and implementation of the audit/assessment/inspection program, including frequency and content
*

Assures technical support to ensure risk reduction and code/regulation compliance
*

Directs development of standardized or specialized corrective action solutions based on trend analysis and audit results
*

Advises Senior Leadership on Safety & Health issues related to existing business to ensure compliance with Safety & Health-related items and provides support for new business by providing analysis and mitigation of Safety & Health issues
*

Develops relationships with client safety professionals
*

Reviews documentation to insure all required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures
*

Manages external Safety & Health consultant/service provider usage, including selection process
*

Manages daily activities of Safety Department and collaborates to improve safety and health onsite and for the company overall
*

Develops and manages Safety & Health budget
*

Oversee safety equipment testing and calibration
*

Ensures completion of all requiredreporting and permitting
*

Ability to manage fleet safety programs including Smith Driving system
*

Ability to develop strategy & set direction
*

Autonomous work habits and ability to handle multiple priorities
*

Ability to lead and direct teams
*

Performs other related duties as required and assigned

Posting of all safety bulletins, safety posters, safety rules, and applicable legislation

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university is preferred with

*

a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership and administration experience in occupational safety, health and environmental programs, loss control, insurance management, or a related field.
*

prior environmental experience is also preferred, or
*

a minimum of eight years of experience as a safety inspector, or
*

10 years of experience as a safety manager for a construction firm.

Each year of formal training or education in a program with emphasis on construction at a college, technical or trade school may be substituted for one year of construction work up to a maximum of three years.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as common technical journals, safety policies, operational documents and simple financialreports.

Must have the ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Must have the ability to effectively present information to management, employees, vendors and customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must have the ability to perform simple mathematical functions: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, as well as the ability to calculate discounts, interest and percentages.

Must have the ability to read and analyze a financial statement.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

*

Must have the ability to compose reports, e-mails and other correspondence which is correct in grammar and usage.

Must have above average general data entry and typing skills.

REASONING ABILITY

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Must have the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in verbal, mathematical or diagram form

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

*

In order to conduct OSHA 10 Hour Class, employee will be required to have successfully completed the OSHA 500/501 classes.
*

For Specialized Equipment Training, employee may be required to attend a train-the-trainer class.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

*

Reports directly to the Corporate Director of Human Resources* Oversees activities of 20-30 branch level safety coordinators in a matrixed reporting relationship environment
