JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY Position Description
Leads/supports the derivation/development, documentation and implementation of contamination controls for one of several spacecraft programs at the conceptual, design, or manufacturing stage at GSFC. Works with or per the direction of the government lead Contamination Engineer, addressing a range of responsibilities depending on lead s availability. Responsibilities include creating, reviewing and implementing contamination control documentation supporting the design, fabrication, assembly,test and transportation of one-of-a-kind, highly specialized space hardware. Monitors, reviews, facilitates and evaluates overall contamination control planning, implementation and verification. Works with essentially all other engineering disciplines on the Project to identify contamination sensitivities, develop appropriate risk-based contamination requirements, negotiate Project acceptance of requirements, and manage/facilitate implementation of the contamination control program. Solves contamination problems encountered during fabrication, assembly, test and transportation of space hardware. Oversight may involve activities on site at Goddard, at local and distant off-site vendors, and at launch sites. Travel may be required, typically less than one week a month.
Position requires 6 to 10 years of engineering experience in Contamination Engineering or a related field, preferably with spacecraft hardware. Key areas include ability and experience determining contamination sensitivities and deriving/negotiating contamination requirements based on instrument/system performance characteristics; Experience implementing contamination controls in collaboration with the design, hardware production, test and inspection functions; Experience with clean room operations and monitoring, materials, vacuum systems, hardware cleaning and inspection methods and knowledge of the space environment (vacuum, particulate and electromagnetic radiation, thermal, atomic oxygen). Must have good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team with people of diverse skill sets and experience levels, including taking and providing technical direction, providing concise, relevant technical rationale, and working with engineers, technicians and management staff.
Other Desired Skills:
Systems Engineering experience is desirable. Familiarity with the space hardware life cycle, especially at NASA Goddard, is desirable; Strong written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with the integration and test environment for specialized, unique scientific instruments or similar hardware for space flight. Launch site experience is desirable
