Enterprise IT Operations is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining a reliable, cost-effective, high-performance production environment, which operates 365 days a year, 24 hours per day.

We use state-of-the-art technology and industry-standard hardware and software. We provide the means to deliver all central computing to the campus community, we investigate and implement new technologies where appropriate, ensure the data and network is secure, and provide access to campus enterprise data. We also provide a network infrastructure across the entire UCSD campus including the provisioning for a high performance research capability with connectivity at 10gig+ from most campus buildings.

The Database Administration (DBA) team supports 3 database platforms containing thousands of database objects for key administrative services including Student, Financial and Payroll/Personnel. Supported platforms include a mainframe environment that contains the key book of record applications, as well as LINUX and Windows platforms. We also support an increasingly critical and complex business analytics environment with multiple related data stores.

Our primary goal is to provide high quality database administration services in alignment with campus and departmental strategy and service level agreements. Our services cover the full spectrum of DBA activity from architecture to design.

The Data Warehouse team provides support services covering data modeling, data integration, sourcing, ETL, metadata management, data access definitions and data governance. Services include current Data Warehouse maintenance and enhancements, development of new conformed model, implementation of a new Enterprise Data Warehouse (DW 2.0), rollout of an automated metadata management capability(IGC), direct support for the Business Intelligence team's requirements and liaison to data governance teams.


Serve as Data Infrastructure Architect and senior DBA for the central Information Technology Services (ITS) organization. Technical lead for projects of criticality to a large enterprise with high consequences for success or failure with general direction. Has large enterprise impact, most often at the campus/medical center/OP-wide, institution-wide and/or multi-institutional level, on policy, architecture and program development. Applies expert level skills in all aspects of database administration and serves as a technical leader in implementing enterprise class database systems.

Regularly develops and implements projects of criticality to a large end-user population in multiple organizational units using enterprise class software with high consequences of success or failure. Leads technical teams and develops database standards and policy. Develops database related solutions through research and related analysis of alternatives. Provide mentorship to other DBA team members. Work in collaboration with Enterprise Architecture team providing expertise in the area of data infrastructure services.



Extensive or expert knowledge of database management systems and standards. Specific knowledge of current DB2 capabilities with emphasis on LUW DB2 including knowledge of BLU.

Expert knowledge of and advanced skills associated with database design, administration and implementation,including capacity planning, interface specifications, performance improvements and reliability of the system at the software, hardware and operating system level.

Skills necessary to address and resolve complex database needs across the organization in complex computing environments.

Extensive knowledge of data infrastructure components and architectural practices.

Advanced knowledge of relevant IT areas including security, networking, operating systems,disaster recovery and client software languages.

Knowledgeable about professional approaches and relevant standards and technology for management of unstructured data such as text and images.

Demonstrates reasoning and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Ability to understand business needs and requirements and to communicate complex concepts effectively.

Strong initiative and ability to learn and evaluate enterprise software-related to database management independently and as a team.

Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases. Required

Technical experience with HADR - High Availability Database Recovery.

Expert-level knowledge of database backup, rollback and rollforward recovery, archiving and disaster recovery.

Extensive knowledge of database Connectivity, DB2 Client and gateways including JDBC and ODBC.

Extensive knowledge of SQL, DB2 Utilities, database performance tuning tools, and third party DB2 administration support toolsets.

Expert knowledge of Operating systems, UNIX, Solaris, Linux, Z/OS.

Technical knowledge of Oracle, MS SQL Server DBMS's. Knowledge of test software code in client server environment.

Proven ability to lead and manage projects from beginning to end including meeting organization, resource assignment, complex technical architecture design and successful implementation.

Has effective written/verbal communication skills. Skills necessary to interact at senior levels with both internal and external contacts on matters of significance to the campus/ medical center/OP or department.

Demonstrated ability to educate and direct technical staff on use of modern database software. Advanced interpersonal, leadership and diplomacy skills in a leadership capacity.

Advanced knowledge of UCSD Policies and Procedures and campus organizational structure and functions.


* Demonstrated experience with SQL Server and/or Oracle database systems.
