Job Description

RTI is a nonprofit research organization of about 4,200 people around the globe. Our two and a half year old Center for Data Science (CDS) is offering a paid student internship for the 2017 summer months of May through August. Staff members in CDS work on research projects across RTI, all aimed at improving the human condition, from solving national and international problems to working in our local communities. So, for example, we may be working with the Department of Justice at the same time as we re working with the Macarthur Foundation and the Durham Police Department, all related to solving problems in criminal justice.

Our work has ranged from public health to criminal and social justice to global health and education. In two and a half years, we ve grown from 5 to 19 staff (one located in our Jakarta, Indonesia office), worked on dozens of projects, presented our work at conferences, at Universities, to the federal government, to international governments, and at the White House. We ve created open source tools and applications, become thought leaders in areas like data-driven justice, and appeared in local and national media.

Our data science interns perform a range of data science activities (according to their skills and interests) on a variety of projects in public health, environment, and the social sciences--modeling and analytics, data viz, database creation and data cleaning, creating web applications, and working with various sources of big data. You will work with data scientists in our Center, solving problems, using open source software, writing and coding, creating web applications, and collaborating with internal subject matter experts. Some interns have also created publications from their work.

* Advanced undergraduate students who will be graduating in 2017 or 2018 or students pursuing a master s degree with strong quantitative skills in math, stat, computer, and computational science with a current GPA of 3.3 or above. Additional degree work in other subjects (e.g., sociology, public health in particular) a plus, and the combination of interdisciplinary subjects is most desirable.

* Strong quantitative skills in math, statistics, computer, and computational science.

* Experience with open source software for statistical analysis and data visualization, such as R, Python, and d3.js. Familiarity or experience with the following web technologies or databases a plus: HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL and NoSQL

* Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills - strong oral, written communication, and presentations skills

* To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
