* High school diploma or equivalent, plus successful completion of a dental assisting or surgical assisting program are required.

* One year of dental assisting or surgical assisting experience will substitute for dental/surgical assisting education program.



Certificates, Licenses, Registration:

* Certificate in Office and Dental Assisting preferred.



Summary:

Provides dental assisting support to the providers of the WVU School of Dentistry. Coordinates the activities of a group of dental assistants within a team. This team responsibility is assigned on a rotating basis each semester. .



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



Assists School of Dentistry providers during patient examination and treatment by greeting patients and preparing for exam; ensuring patients are properly seated, draped, and aligned for examination; independently applying or assisting in the application of rubber dam isolation; transferring dental instruments and supplies to provider during treatment; maintaining a clean, dry oral operating field by using high velocity evacuation systems; preparing, mixing, measuring, and dispensing various materials as instructed during dental procedures; placing, exposing, and/or processing, images; ensuring all equipment is clean, sanitized, and disinfected at all times; obtaining dental supplies and instruments from stock area; preparing and arranging dental instruments, materials, and medications for use during patient care; cleaning and/or sterilizing dental instruments and equipment by appropriate methods; returning instruments and dental equipment to appropriate area(s); setting up and assisting with the operation of a wide variety of highly specialized patient care equipment. After successful completion of a program of education approved by the WV Board of Dental Examiners and documented clinical experiences by the supervising dentist, a dental assistant may also perform expanded functions as defined by the Board.



Provides other support during the delivery of patient care by: obtaining / accessing various records; recording treatment procedures or other information within the electronic record; obtaining electronic provider approvals ; ; participating in the training of students in regard to various aspects of the delivery of dental care; demonstrating regard for the dignity, respect, and safety of patients as defined in the philosophy of the organization; displaying a caring and courteous attitude and representing the organization in a positive manner to all persons; monitoring all measures of infection control to ensure providers are in compliance with OSHA regulations, as well as infection control policies of the organization; maintaining current MSDS records, updating records as appropriate; maintaining the confidentiality of patient and business-related information, without infraction.



Provides daily guidance to other members of the dental assisting team/cluster; participates in the selection of qualified applicants for vacant positions; arranges for training of new employees; schedules dental assistants to ensure adequate and efficient coverage at all times; monitors dental assistant performance on a daily basis to ensure efficient, high quality care and adherence to organizational policies and procedures; participates in the ongoing evaluation of assistants, counsels dental assistants as needed; coordinates leave time to ensure adequate coverage; submits time sheets; communicates with staff through regular meetings; communicates status of daily operations to Director, Clinical Ed./Pt. Care; participates in problem identification and resolution; assists in the development of policies and procedures; promotes and contributes positively to the work of the team by volunteering to assist co-workers; contributing ideas and problem solving with co-workers as observed through leadership; participates in discussions with Director, Clinical Ed. / Pt. Care; recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned; regularly performs duties in an independent manner with minimal direct supervision; consistently coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency; demonstrates ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose an appropriate course of action; promotes and contributes positively to relationships between clinical areas.



Assists in various special care environments; e.g. operating room, sedation room, etc.; assists in the preparation of paperwork for special care environments; schedules medically necessary tests prior to treatment in special care environments.



Adheres to proper attendance and punctuality standards; provides clerical assistance as needed within clinics; performs other duties as assigned

* Position requires prolonged sitting in uncomfortable positions. Contact with patients creates hazards for exposure to various infectious diseases. Position encounters risk of cuts or wounds in handling instruments and exposure to radiation. Hazards exist while using special infection control and decontamination solutions. Lifting and stacking of supplies. Walking to distribute supplies or accommodate needs in clinic areas. Position is exposed to x-rays.
