JOB DESCRIPTIONDepartment Assistant / PROJECT ASST III:
The Department Assistant (DA) supports the Department Coordinator in the administration of the graduate and undergraduate programs of NELC. The DA interacts with faculty individually and/or in groups, and as such, is one of the centers of communication within the Department, between the Department and other units of the university, and between the Department and the outside world (prospective students, alumni, etc). The DA follows FERPA guidelines and understands the importance of confidentiality in student and faculty affairs. Drawing upon a personal familiarity and expertise in higher education, the DA articulates complex departmental procedures to faculty, students, and staff, both orally and in writing; provides administrative support and guidance to students and faculty; develops informational documents and forms for students' administrative responsibilities and promotional materials for departmental events; assists in organizing student-related events; performs regular website maintenance; works with web applications; assists with the faculty hiring process; serves on various faculty committees; answers inquiries about the degree programs; provides general office support.
Projects that the Department Assistant will support include; course-scheduling; quarterly registration; new student orientation; tracking and keeping up-to-date records on students' progress, reviewing students' progress; maintaining alumni database; gathering info for website and department newsletter; and others as assigned. The Department Assistant interacts daily with faculty, students, and other administrative offices such as the Dean, the Master of the College, Dean of Students, the Registrar, as well as the general public. The Department Assistant's work is accomplished within a team environment and in accordance with the mission of the Department, the Division, and the University.
This position will have two months off during the summer, July and August. Benefits will be continuous throughout the year.
