Description Directs and manages a diverse team of engineering professionals performing research, development, design and/or implementation of products, services, solutions for the company's portfolio. Responsible for creating and communicating technical strategy within the organization and/or across the function. May manage roles outside of the engineering function and across multiple countries, regions or global. Responsibilities* Provides direct and ongoing strategic leadership for a department or functional organization of multiple subordinate managers and high-level individual contributors designing and developing engineering solutions utilizing multiple engineering disciplines for products, systems, software, and solutions.* Creates strategic and tactical operations and resource plans, goals, and priorities for assigned organization based on business and technology roadmap and functional objectives.* Manages headcount, deliverables, schedules, and costs for the organization, ensuring that resources are appropriately allocated and that goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets are met in accordance with organizational metrics and business plans.* Engages with program managers, marketing, supply chain, technical leaders and executives to communicate program status, escalate issues, and guide and influence strategic decision-making* Manages senior relationships and escalated issues with outsourced partners and suppliers, including setting expectations regarding deliverables, product quality, schedules, and costs; ensures that organization is effectively leveraging outsourced resources.* Identifies opportunities for and drives organizational initiatives and programs to support business process improvements and cost reductions.* Provides overall people-care management for direct reports, including hiring, setting and monitoring of annual performance plans, coaching, and career development; drives and fosters organization-wide performance standards, expectations, and practices to support ongoing team member and process development. Job Description:
The Director of Thin Client R&D leads the engineering organization responsible for product development - roadmaps, core technologies and system components. This includes Thin Client Hardware, BIOS, Operating Systems Images, User Interface, and Device Management Software The Thin Client development team is a globally distributed team in Houston, Fort Collins, Taipei, and Shanghai. Products are developed for volume deployment with industry standard virtualizing environments for Citrix HDX, Microsoft RDP and VMware PC-over-IP. The portfolio spans a range of cost points, performance and flexibility to adapt to diverse virtualization and embedded use cases. HP's Thin Client solutions deliver a leadership worldwide offering known for performance quality, reliability, and supportability. The Thin Client R&D Director is responsible with the General Manager and Marketing director to develop and evolve the business strategy to optimize the product portfolio, R&D investments and end-to-end solutions to maximize HPs competiveness and achieve/maintain market leadership. The Thin Client R&D Director is accountable for partnership management of R&D deliverables from ODMs, IHVs, OS software partners, and virtualization software providers for all phases of the product lifecycle. Planning and program management aspects of the role will include collaboration with marketing organizations, regional sales teams, supply chain, support organizations and relevant HP R&D organizations in Personal Systems businesses.The Director must effectively communicate models with senior management, project & program management, development & test engineers, technology partners, technical support specialists, field personnel and customers.Key responsibilities include:* Provide engineering guidance for the product roadmap to the Business Unit - senior management, Product Marketing, and Supply Chain.* Drive the organization through the application of clearly defined roles and responsibilities* Set product and technology objectives for core HP technologies* Drive customer-valued innovation into core technology areas through the application of new technologies, management of technology partners, and effective leadership of software and hardware development teams.* Ensure product development is consistent with the R&D core values - People Matter, Customer Intimacy, Passion for the Business, and Execution Excellence* Oversee the team's activities to ensure the application of sound engineering & software development practices, that appropriate checks are in place, and to deliver solutions with exceptional Total Customer Experience.* Lead changes as needed in organization structure, development investment levels, and workforce.* Actively manage talent to ensure that all individuals have individual development plans in place, are seeking to increase their skills & contribution to HP. Identify top talent and critical talent gaps. Drive active succession planning and risk management planning for critical talent areas.* Drive contingency and risk management planning to proactively eliminate project risks. Develop the R&D portions of the Thin Client category business continuity plan.* Manage Security deliverables and checkpoints within the Product Lifecycle process. Oversee the security incident escalation process.* Develop and manage the R&D budget for the Thin Client R&D. Drive the engineering team to operate effectively and efficiently within the R&D operational goals and objectives. Seek and drive cross-organizational leverage opportunities* Lead the performance evaluation and total rewards processes* Manage priorities for development, sustaining and support activities* Set targets and ensure effective cost management for platforms, and ensure that product development projects meet all established targetsKnowledge and Skills* Organizational and strategic management skills, including budget and business planning and forecasting* Advanced relationship management skills, including partnering and consulting with senior management and executive roles for internal and external partners* Superior business acumen, technical knowledge, and industry experience encompassing multiple engineering, technology, and product domains.* Virtualization/embedded industry experience.* Experience managing Hardware, Software and Solution development* Advanced leadership skills, including coaching, teambuilding, conflict resolution, and management.* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.* Advanced project management skills including time and risk management, resource prioritization, and project structuring.* Advanced communication skills catered to a wide variety of audiences* Experienced in managing resources across geographies to drive workforce development and achieve desired results.* Strong understanding of HP's policies and processes.* Advanced multi-tasking and prioritization skills. Qualifications Education and Experience:* First level university degree or equivalent experience required. May have advanced university degree.* 15 or more years of related experience, including 10 years of people management experience.* Ability to travel to HP, partner and customer sites, less than 15% of time.*
