Job Description:Manage and maintain an efficient, well-organized, well-equipped Surgical Services Department.
Develops mechanisms to assess patients (and families) response to nursing care and validates that care provided to patients is consistent with nursing care plan, medical treatment, and is responsive to patient and family expectations.
Monitors financial performance (expenses, revenues, and productivity) and justifies monthly budget variances
Ensures that staffing patterns meet work requirements and that all employee are competent (annually training, and annual performance evaluations are complete)
Monitors staff turnover and develops and implements retention strategies to maintain turnover less that 8% annually
Assumes accountability for all relevant personnel functions as appropriate; i.e., recruitment, hiring, terminating, evaluating, counseling, and educating with primary emphasis placed on staff retention
Assumes accountability for remaining current regarding standards of care established by the profession, regulatory & accreditation bodies and hospital policy and procedures
Directs unit-based performance improvement and patient/employee safety programs and projects
Participates on task forces, PI teams, committees, etc
Holds staff accountable for patient and employee safety standards, polices, procedures and practices
Encourages cooperation, teamwork at the department, division, and hospital wide levels
Provides coaching and education to staff so that they can meet/exceed performance expectations
Cultivates a positive work environment by being open, honest, and trustworthy as evidenced by low turnover and vacancy rates
Enthusiastic and optimistic and displays a can do attitude and takes appropriates risks.Uses techniques with staff to generate enthusiasm and commitment to get the work done
Listens carefully and actively solicits input from others
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Nursing, Masters preferred, licensed in Massachusetts. Minimum of 5 years management experience, 5-10 years progressive perioperative experience. Effective leadership and management qualities and clinical and financial skills. Evidence of continuing education; certification, especially CNOR, desirable. BCLS certification.
