Saint Simons By-The-Sea is a 101 bed psychiatric and
addictive disease hospital for adults and adolescents.
We strive to provide quality mental health treatment and
addiction treatment services in the area. Located on
Saint Simons Island, Ga., Saint Simons By-The-Sea's
serene island setting ensures privacy and anonymity,
enabling the patient to concentrate on recovery. Our
hospital is conveniently located within driving distance
of Jacksonville, FL, Savannah, GA, and other surrounding
cities in the South Georgia and Northern Florida region.

Saint Simons By-The-Sea's staff has extensive experience
in the fields of addiction treatment, recovery, relapse
prevention and mental health treatment.
SSBTS is seeking an experienced Director of Nursing.
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the
development, organization, provision, and evaluation of
all nursing functions within the facility with 24/7
responsibility for those functions. He/she utilizes
sound patient care standards and recognized nursing
standards of practice in the development and
implementation of policies, procedures, and models of
nursing care. Leadership is provided with consideration
of the organization as a whole; promoting an atmosphere
of respect and encouragement for professional growth for
all nursing staff members. The Director of Nursing
collaborates with other facility leaders on all matters
relevant to the delivery of quality patient care
services and continually assesses the utilization of the
collaborative process among the nursing staff at all
levels and other disciplines/departments to ensure
organized, comprehensive, efficient, and effective
patient care. Ensures the nursing care meets all of the
State and Federal regulations and meets the Joint
Commission standards too.
Directly supervises more than 30 employees. This
Director carries out supervisory responsibilities in
accordance with the organization s policies and
applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing,
hiring, and training employees; planning assigning, and
directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and
disciplining employees; addressing complaints and
resolving problems. This position oversees the nursing
education program, and infection control.

Develops and assures implementation of nursing care
standards and policies and procedures in accordance with
Nurse Practice Act.
Participates in activities related to hospital
organizational planning, goal setting and policy
development, and interprets hospital policies and
procedures.
Establishes nursing services goals and objectives that
are consistent with overall hospital specific program
goals and objectives.
Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Services to
develop program specific objectives and ensures policies
are consistent with each program s philosophy and needs.
Is available and accessible to nursing staff for
consultation as needed.
Develops and reviews a written organizational plan for
nursing services annually in consultation with the
Medical Staff and hospital administration.
Establishes and maintains a written plan for service,
which describes the nature and organization of clinical
groups within the hospital.
Establishes generic nursing standards of care and
practice for the hospital.
Assists Director of Clinical Services in developing
standards of care that are specific to the units.
Documents standards of care and standards of practice as
part of the written organizational for nursing services.
Develops nursing policies and procedures that reflect
the written standards and reviews them annually.
Works cooperatively with the administrative team and
provides clinical leadership to the facility.
Assists in developing department budget.
Responsible for maintaining department within budget.
Provides input into the development of other clinical
services.
Ensures all appropriate policy manuals are available to
staff on the units.
Takes action to resolve problems or improve care as
required.
Consults with medical directors in order to upgrade and
monitor nursing services. Makes appropriate
recommendations.
Annually reviews nursing services job descriptions and
updates as appropriate.
Assists in building an environment that values each
member of the team.
Assists staff in developing leadership skills that
enhance clinical and professional work.
Maintains a system for verifying licensure for nurses.
Participates in the orientation of all new employees.
Demonstrates full level of awareness of hospital milieu,
and provides appropriate guidance to staff.
Maintains a professional ethical code of behavior in
accordance with the Nurse Practice Act.
Holds monthly meetings with staff to review the quality
of nursing care delivered, review procedural changes,
and maintain communication.
Regularly meets with nursing leadership to review
quality of nursing care delivered, review procedural
changes and maintain communication.
Develops annual staff development plan for nursing
department, reviews it annually, and provides written
report.
Ensures assessments identify medical/nursing and
psychosocial needs; and establishes frequency of
assessments.
Ensures that the master treatment plan includes goals
and objectives by all appropriate departments.
Consults with staff to educate and encourage least
restrictive environment for patients at all times in
order to ensure safety and patient rights.
Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Services to
ensue the integrated assessment, progress notes,
treatment plan updates and other relevant information is
conveyed per hospital policy.
Develops department specific performance improvement
plan annually.
Reviews performance improvement plan monthly, identifies
trends, and provides report on findings monthly.
Utilizes performance improvement information and other
periodic needs assessments in determining educational
needs.
Ultimately responsible for maintaining continuity of
patient care.
Maintains positive working relationships with
professionals in the community, including referral
sources to the hospital.
Ensures staff receives timely performance evaluations.
Ensures policies and procedures are enforced
consistently across the department and per hospital
policy.
Handles special projects as needed.
Requirements:
RN licensed in state of Georgia. BSN required. Master s
degree in Nursing with psychiatric emphasis preferred.
If DON does not have an advanced degree in nursing or a
related field, he/she must have routine
supervision/consultation with an RN with an MSN in
psychiatric/mental health nursing. Minimum of 5 years of
progressive supervisory experience required.
