JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Transportation directs and coordinates the activities related to the transporting of students and maintenance of all vehicles.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

*

Plans and develops methods, procedures and schedules for student transportation (thirty- buses in the fleet).
*

Directs and coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs with shop personnel.
*

Administers standard operating procedures within the Transportation Department in accordance with Federal, state, and local regulations.
*

Reviews office procedures/input into computer/reports generated.
*

Keeps informed on current developments of Federal and State laws likely to effect the transportation department.
*

Hiring of drivers and transportation staff.Perform procedures necessary for employees to meet these requirements.
*

Obtains and reviews bids and proposals from vendors. Selects a vendor according to school-established criteria and product-specific criteria.
*

Approve vendor invoices, , and forward to business office.
*

Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, counseling, disciplining, directing, training, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving department objectives within budget.
*

Recommends new hires, promotions, termination and transfers for the purpose of maintaining staffing needs and productivity of the work force.
*

Researches new equipment/vehicles, laws, regulations, etc. for the purpose of recommending purchases, contracts and proper maintenance of district wide services.
*

Works effectively with parents and the community to resolve transportation issues.
*

Perform all of the same essential functions as school bus driver when required to drive.
*

Responds to emergency situations during and after standard hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
*

Assesses incidents, complaints, etc. (e.g. safety issues, transportation routes, legal issues, department staffing, etc.) for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum five (5) years of recent, successful experience in student transportation including three years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
* Must know pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations and be able to interpret and apply accordingly.
* Must possess strong verbal, written and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with students, parents and all levels of employees and management.
* Must have ability to organize and prioritize workload and to meet deadlines.
