Provide technical expertise and engineering support to ensure effective operations at National Grid facilities.

At the lower levels this can encompass a range of duties including fault investigation, repair, maintenance and replacement of building electrical & fire systems, safety implementation and monitoring and participation in small and large scale engineering and construction projects.

At the higher levels this role will also develop systems and design, plan, manage and engineer works in order to ensure effective facilities operations.

Position will be a part of the Facilities Management Department which oversees approximately 8 million square feet of building footprint in NY, MA, and RI consisting offices and electric and gas construction operations sites. Engineer will work closely with the Facilities O&M department to ensure National Grid facilities are provided with the appropriate technical expertise to meet needs of National Grid.

Position will be based out of Syracuse, NY; Waltham, Massachusetts; or Hicksville, New York; and routine work will be primarily located in region corresponding to where the position is based. However, the Engineer will be required to support all company facilities throughout the National Grid US territory.


* Lead specific projects within area of capability and perform engineering studies, analysis and investigations, in order to recommend corrective action in problem areas, or to prevent problems.

* Independently collate and analyze data within using pre-determined tools, methods and formats in order to support the Facility Management s decision making process.

* Execute instructions and requests, plan and organize resources and make appropriate arrangements to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and in line with relevant policies and processes.

* Test and challenge existing procedures and highlight areas for improvement in order to ensure they are robust.

* Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid.

* Undertake specific tasks of varying complexity in order to support Facilities Management staff in the design of technical solutions.

* Build upon technical/professional skills within own area of specialism or of other processes in order to continually grow your personal contribution to the business.

* Work closely with Facilities Management operating personnel to provide operating and maintenance support to avoid technical obsolescence and to assure maximum safety, reliability and cost efficiency for Company facilities, properties and related systems.

* Evaluate energy consumption and develop cost saving initiatives in support of various company programs.

* Lead the implementation of engineering design for Facilities Management through the management of engineering consultants and in consultation with other groups within the area in order to ensure design is fit for purpose and benefits National Grid facilities operations.

* Make authoritative technical recommendations in order to provide design solutions which have a significant impact on the operations performance of facilities across the US business including Critical Network Infrastructure in the short and longer term.

* Lead, motivate and develop a professional team of engineering consultants, prioritize work and allocate resources in order to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and customer needs.

* Develop processes and review policies relating engineering systems/processes in order to ensure they are in line with strategic facilities objectives and meet the needs of internal customers and regulators.

* Proactively build and maintain internal and external networks in order to penetrate, absorb and apply technical best practice to the engineering discipline.

* Develop process and policy specifications and criteria and options and evaluate those options to support senior management decision-making in the relevant field.

* Work with business units to translate objectives into well defined requirements with clearly defined business cases in order to support change and innovation within National Grid.

* Ensure capital projects and programs are appropriately assessed, designed, planned, resourced, scheduled and constructed in a timely and cost effective manner in order to ensure best value for National Grid.

* Provide electrical engineering support to the Facilities Engineering and Facilities O&M functions including Critical Network Infrastructure.

* Act as a technical liaison between Facilities Management, other business areas, outside contractors, technical consultant and regulatory agencies.




* A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school and working towards/holder of the Registered Professional Engineering License. 5-8 years professional development in an engineering field.

* Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation. Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation.

* General understanding of building electrical and fire systems.

* Must have the ability to read and interpret general construction plans and specifications, as some assignments will involve project management, field supervision and quality control responsibilities.


* A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; plus completion of a Master s Degree in electrical engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering school preferred.

* Registered Professional Engineering License with up to 12 years professional development in a facilities engineering field or 20 years of relevant experience.

* Must possess through knowledge and understanding of building systems including but not limited to electric power and distribution systems, lighting, backup generation, UPS, Fire & Life Safety and related systems.

* Strong knowledge of appropriate technology and systems that make up the infrastructure support of data centers, including tier 1-4 standards.

* Expert within the facilities field. Extensive and significant knowledge of critical facilities work or broad technical depth in multiple, related fields.

* Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation. Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation.


* Sees multiple relationships, identifying several likely causes or consequences of a situation, for example in providing design solutions which have a significant impact on business performance.
