JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Electrical Engineer (Hardware) performs full performance professional engineering work on a variety of complex engineering assignments. Emphasis is placed upon the application of electrical / electronic engineering principles in the areas of hardware components (i.e., PC, test tools, etc.) and server / computer systems. This position works in the National Airspace System Engineering (NASE) area of Data Communications Support. This area is responsible for maintenance services of all FAA owned equipment and FAA leased services involved in the transmission of data within FAA facilities and organizations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Researches and analyzes specifications; recommends appropriate hardware platform.
Designs, develops and tests hardware components and computer / server systems. Isolates and corrects any defects.
Updates, enhances and maintains existing hardware, servers and computer systems. Isolates and corrects any defects.
Analyzes complex equipment to determine the best approach for improvements. Builds, tests and modifies equipment.
Identifies complex problems in computer hardware. Develops, evaluates and implements solutions.
Conducts software programming, and ensures that computer hardware components work in conjunction with the latest software developments. Evaluates interface between hardware and software in relation to the operational and performance requirements of the overall system.
Develops, revises, tests, and maintains hardware, software and associated documentation applied to LANs. Ensures documentation describes functionality, maintenance requirements and maintenance techniques.
Develops training materials for network users.
Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.
Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Computer Science with at least 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must be in non-business statistics and mathematics (including differential and integral calculus) or any combination thereof. Specialized advanced degrees appropriate to the field of technology may be substituted for a limited portion of experience requirements.
This position requires experience in developing, revising, testing, and maintaining hardware, software, and associated documentation applied to LANs. This position also requires experience with development of training curriculum for network users.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
Operational knowledge of local area networks (LANs), software programming and software development with ability to conduct reviews, audits and testing
Knowledge of electrical / electronic principles related to hardware components (PC, test tools, etc.), server systems and computer systems
Ability to apply logic and reasoning to goals and assumptions
Analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to organize, present and explain information

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
Must be able to pass an FAA background investigation to work in a position of Public Trust
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professiona1journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
