This position is located within the Advanced Powertrain organization at PTC and involves developing and applying simulation tools to support engine development. Responsibilities include development of next-generation combustion, air systems and aftertreatment technologies for diesel engines for on-road truck applications. This includes analysis and optimization of advanced combustion and engine systems for PACCAR s MX family of engines (11-13L). Additional responsibilities include interfacing with truck divisions (Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF). The person will also work with external research and engineering organizations that are partnered with PACCAR.

Simulate and evaluate advanced heavy-duty diesel engine concepts

Develop and correlate 1-D engine simulations

Develop and correlate 3-D combustion CFD simulations

Optimize engine combustion system, air management and aftertreatment designs

Communicate results and recommendations to team and stakeholders on a regular basis

Coordinate test-cell evaluation of prototypes based on optimized designs

Cooperate with cross-divisional counterparts

Keep abreast of emerging technologies, tools, and methods

Work with the team to facilitate technology transfer to relevant PACCAR divisions


Masters or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Engineering Physics

5 years experience in combustion and/or air systems development and/or performance development.

Strong background and understanding of diesel engine system fundamentals and understanding of how these relate to overall engine performance.

In-depth knowledge of 1-D and 3-D simulation tools (e.g. STAR-CD, GT-Power).

Demonstrated skills and experience correlating diesel engine and combustion 1-D and 3-D models with experimental data.

Previously demonstrated strong technical knowledge, analysis, and communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills, be a self-starter and have demonstrated high levels of initiative and innovation.


Demonstrated skills and experience with engine testing, advanced engine control development and state-of-the-art data acquisition systems including high-speed data acquisition for cylinder pressure analysis (e.g. AVL Indimeter) are desired.

Knowledge of design optimization tools (e.g. Heeds) as well as Pro/E is desirable.

Experience with turbocharger matching and aftertreatment flow and performance analysis are desired.
