Job Description:

As part of the corporate Enterprise Quality team, the Engine SQE leads quality initiatives with MTD s global engine manufacturing partners. This corporate role has daily interaction with Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Engine Development, and Quality personnel at multiple facilities. The SQE drives quality activities at vendors and throughout the supply base supporting the engine program by conducting on-site assessments, participating in engineering & quality reviews, monitoring production issues, analyzing warranty & returns, and collecting other feedback for improvement opportunities. This is a hands-on position with significant international travel opportunity that will mentor multi-cultural team members in application & development of structured problem solving and quality skills.

Responsibilities include:


Audit & assess Tier 1 engine vendors regularly, report discovered issues

Work with onsite foreign national MTD staff to develop, implement and document improvements, drive corrective actions, coordinate reworks, and react to quality spills

Organize ongoing issues and track to ensure timely progress on deliverables

Coordinate efforts with corporate, factory, and vendor management as a team while maintaining positive working relationships to accomplish objectives

Mentor and develop team members & vendor QA personnel.Provide guidance and training in proper use of Quality Systems (ISO/TS) and Tools such as Operating Procedures, Document Control, Work Instructions, Control Plans, SPC, Charting, FMEA, and MSA techniques.

Identify opportunities & weaknesses in vendor or internal processes (system, assembly, test, audit, sub-process, etc) to meet MTD expectations

Organize and perform DOE, develop poka-yokes, collect & analyze process/product data, and other defect and variation reduction methodologies

Ensure that quality, reliability, and compliance expectations are being met and methods in alignment with the appropriate industry & MTD standards, update internal standards as needed

Recommend and develop appropriate gage & fixtures for use in all areas to ensure engine quality

Promote problem solving activities and skill/tool development, usage of Process Mapping, Statistical Data Analysis, Fishbone, 5-Why, and 8D, etc.

Support APQP and CI activities for engine programs including PPAP, specification reviews, engine and component testing where needed, and on-site support at MTD facilities for new engine launches.

Analyze warranty to identify opportunities and measure improvements for effectiveness

Minimum Qualification Requirements:


Willingness and ability to frequently travel to China with other occastional travel (up to 50% as needed).

Strong communication skills, effective with all levels of personnel with widely varied backgrounds and cultures

Excellent problem solving abilities, creativity, and resourcefulness

3 Years work experience in Quality or Manufacturing AND demonstrated understanding of and ability to adapt & apply Quality Systems & Tools

BS/BA degree, OR equivalent additional QA/QE/SQE experience, certification, or training

Efficient computer skills (MS Office applications, AS400, & other business software as needed)

++PLUSES++ Knowledge of 4 cycle engines, ASQ membership & certifications, Strength in blueprint reading, GD&T, & metrology, familiarity with common manufacturing procesess: AL-Casting, Forging, Machining, Stamping, Welding, Plastic Injection, Winding, Rubber Goods, Painting, Plating, Heat Treat, & Assembly.
