Job Description

This position is part of PG&E's Entry Engineer Rotation Program.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company is committed to the safe, reliable, cost-effective and code compliant operations of its natural gas distribution system. PG& Gas Transmission & Distribution organization is responsible for the maintenance, operation and capital improvements to PG&E's 6,000 miles of gas transmission pipeline, compression and pressure regulating stations, underground storage fields and major custody metering facilities.

Engineers have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive training program designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed as an Associate Gas Engineer. The initial training program incorporates several methods of learning including project participation and management which teach engineers about the expansion and reinforcement of gas distribution facilities under the guidance of an assigned mentor. Specific duties include:

Gas System Planning:

Computer modeling of gas infrastructure to analyze facility loading and pressure regulation.
Forecast customer load projections and identify conditions, which may adversely impact service reliability and safety.
Conduct economic studies of project alternatives and recommend system improvements.

Gas System Engineering:

Design of gas distribution pipeline, pressure regulation and metering facilities.
Plan, design and manage rehabilitation or expansion of gas infrastructure.
Investigate and apply most effective construction methodologies, including new technologies.

Gas System Operations:

Provide technical support on major engineering projects, operations, construction and maintenance of gas distribution system.
Develop knowledge of applicable state, federal codes and company standards.
Provide field and office consultation for design operations and maintenance of gas facilities.

Project Management:

Plan, analyze and manage major projects, including financial investments, timelines and resources.
Provide technical support on major projects to repair, replace or expand gas facilities.


Following your 12-month rotation you will be assigned to an area within the Gas Transmission & Distribution Organization, taking into consideration your career interests, career development and PG&E's business needs.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical OR Civil Engineering, with graduation dates between December 2010 - August 2011
A valid California driver's license is required.

EIT or FE certification


Computer skills - computer modeling experience is desired


Coursework in Engineering Economics


Work experience in engineering internships or co-ops


Experience in utilities, construction and engineering consultation


3.0 GPA or greater
