The Northern California & Nevada (NCN) Region of Airgas USA, LLC., is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Specialist to join our San Jose, CA team.



JOB DESCRIPTION:



* Provides administrative and technical support to the Branch and Plant Managers for their environmental and safety training activities, including interfacing with regulatory agencies addressing environmental and hazardous materials issues.

* Duties include training and auditing at field locations and accident, injury, and incident investigation when applicable.

* Interfaces with third party adjusters, injured associates, and managers to promptly settle open Worker's Compensation cases and maintain the confidential Worker's Compensation files.

* Assists in newly hired associates' orientation into Airgas NCN.





ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



* EPA, DHS, CAL/OSHA, FDA, and DOT training and auditing at approximately 15 field locations.

* Leads accident, injury, and incident investigations at assigned locations.

* Promotes a safe work environment by supporting field locations with safety compliance and injury prevention.

* Promptly and courteously answers approximately 20 phone calls per day to establish and maintain good relations with the callers and to assist managers at the branches and plants.

* Maintains Risk Management Plans (RMPs) at assigned locations.

* Maintains Hazardous Materials Business Plans at assigned locations.

* Maintains confidential Workers' Compensation files and statistics.

* Interfaces with third party adjusters, injured associates, and managers to promptly settle open Worker's Compensation cases and maintain the confidential Worker's Compensation files.

* Assists in regulatory reporting including CAL/OSHA, EPA, DHS, FDA, and DOT requirements.

* Provides administrative and technical support to the Branch and Plant managers for their safety training activities including publishing the monthly safety topics.

* Assists in newly hired associates' orientation into Airgas NCN.

* Maintains accurate corporate vehicle mileage records.

* Maintains a neat, clean, and professional personal appearance.

* Ensures all administrative procedures and safety rules are strictly observed.

* Attends at least one safety meeting each month at a field location.

* Works offsite at field locations up to 60% of the time.



MARGINAL DUTIES:



* Performs other general duties as required and/or directed.





MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



* Must be able to work a regularly scheduled workweek.

* Must have personal vehicle to travel to field locations and provide an acceptable driving record.

* Excellent communication skills, particularly with multi-line phone systems.

* Must be able to type 40 wpm using a computer.

* Must have strong knowledge and skills with word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

* Must be able to demonstrate basic math skills.

* Must be able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize/organize work.

* Must be able to read and understand technical rules, policies, regulations, and laws.

* Ability to work independently and under pressure to meet deadlines.

* Ability to maintain a cool demeanor when in difficult situations or dealing with stressed or injured personnel.

* Ability to occasionally lift 25 - 40 lbs., and ability to perform work during prolonged sitting or standing up to 8 hours; frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motion also required.

* Must be able to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.

* High school diploma or equivalent.

* Must be able to operate in a drug-free workplace.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



* Associate's or Bachelor's degree and experience in related field.

* Familiarity with hazardous materials safety and operations.

* Experience with in workers compensation claim management and road safety management.

* Background in injury and accident prevention in an operational setting.

* MS Access and/or MS Publisher skills.
