JOB DESCRIPTION

The Epidemiologist investigates and reports Zika virus infections among pregnant women and their fetuses and infants in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health departments. This position is responsible for conducting and augmenting disease surveillance activities within state and local health departments in up to twenty regions across the United States.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties maybe assigned.

Investigates and reports Zika virus infections among pregnant women and their fetuses and infants, including Zika virus disease cases with severe clinical manifestations (e.g., congenital infection with microcephaly or other birth defects,) to the CDC Birth Defects Surveillance Systems.

Serves as a technical lead to optimize US Zika Pregnancy Registry. This would include site visits to state and local health, tribal, local and territorial health departments: (1) to coordinate the design of the Registry protocol for local transmission investigation and abstraction and (2) to troubleshoot surveillance and medical record abstraction processes to ensure best quality Registry.

Coordinates visits with state and local public health departments. Develops, communicates, and executes against site visit plan.

Develops and maintains strong working relationship with state and local health department leadership and staff.

Provides suggestions to improve surveillance efforts based upon the individual local health department's needs, capabilities and limitations in order to drive public health action.

Identifies and reports all eligible cases that meet US Zika Pregnancy Registry case definition, including pregnant women in the U.S. with laboratory evidence of Zika virus (positive or inconclusive tests Zika virus tests regardless of whether they have symptoms) and prenatally or exposed infants born to these women, as well as infants with laboratory evidence of congenital Zika virus infection (positive of inconclusive test results, regardless of whether they have symptoms) and the retrospective inclusion of their mothers in the registry.

In coordination with Registry staff, completes and transmits securely and in a timely manner U.S, Zika Pregnancy Registry forms for maternal and infant follow up, including but not limited to registry data elements in the format required for the registry unless state law forbids transmission of certain Registry data elements.

Provides technical assistance to sustain and enhance laboratory diagnostic capacity and ensures laboratory capacity to collect serum and urine and perform Zika virus testing in accordance with current CDC guidance.

Collaborates with medical record abstractor and/or data analysts to conduct reviews and abstractions of medical and health-related records of Zika-infected women and their offspring. Such medical record abstraction will occur prenatally, at delivery/birth hospitalization, and for surviving children up to three years of age, using pre-defined specifications.

Reviews surveillance data and contributes to assurance of data accuracy, quality and completeness. Developes surveillance reports.

Maintains knowledge of and ensures compliance with all policies and regulatory requirements.

Serves as a resource to state and local health departments and team members at the national, state and local levels.

May train junior level staff as needed.

Travels more than 70% of the time.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Master's degree with a focus on epidemiology and minimum of two (2) years' work experience in epidemiology in a public health agency or a Bachelor's degree with coursework in epidemiology, health education, biostatistics, or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years' experience in applied public health practice. RN or MD is a plus.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
